New, free, replacement wheel (100 G) came on Friday. I will replace the fractured one this week and see how it works. Rio was straight forward in replacing the bad wheel - quick and free !! thanks all for the advice.

The 100 grit wheel is definitely made for lapidary. Made in Israel. I emailed Rio, explained the situation and offered to send photos. They responded within a few hours and are sending a replacement wheel. Good folks. Can anyone offer a suggestion about "how long" the wheel should run dry after use? Should it be completely dry? Thanks again - all - for your advice. dj

Thanks : I do let it run for 15 - 30 minutes after every use. If the wheel get wet, it runs till dry.. That is what the gentleman who sold it to me said, and he was older than god, so I listened. ( I may be overdoing the drying stage, what do you think? - seriously) I do plan to contact Rio in the morning send pictures. hoping for the best. thanks again Chuck. Don PS > I assume that the photos are visible? dj

I have the same problem with nails. I have NONE left. Have tried finger cots, plastic tape, leather sleeves (made myself) and band aids. Nothing was satisfactory. Then I bought some green wrapping tape off Amazon.
Saf-T-Tape Sticky Gauze Tape, 3/4" X 30 Yards, Green, 16/Pk
I wrap the most affected joints (usually thumb and middle finger) from the tip of the finger to the first knuckle. Works pretty well. At least I have stopped bleeding : )

Have practiced posting a photo (for the first time) and it worked. Here is the reason: I bought a new 8" 100 grit grinding wheel from Rio Grande. It's 1.5" wide and installation was easy. Put it and a new 200 grit wheel on my FranTom 10" combo. worked well for a few days then started using it again last night and notice that the wheel has what feels like a "rough" spot near the right edge. I stopped to inspect and found that parts of the side of the wheel are falling off. i1308.photobucket.com/albums/s605/don_jackson3/Grinding%20Problem/DSC00398_zpsoqpoii8h.jpg s1308.photobucket.com/user/don_jackson3/media/Grinding%20Problem/DSC00398_zpsoqpoii8h.jpg.html?o=1Please let me know if this is something to be expected, totally unusual, weird, or if I may have caused it. Any and all advice is appreciated. I am aware that the wheel is cupping and I will get better at that but the falling apart seems odd. I'm still new at this and learning much from this forum > thanks big time.

I have read the term undercut on many "rock" sites and think I would know it when I see it but I would like to have one of you experts tell me what it is. Am about to build a polisher and am getting ready to study procedures for polishing stones. Undercut seems to come up a lot but no explanations are given on the pages I'm reading. TIA

Thanks to you two for the input and advice. I'll be studying dressing brick and T-handle diamond bar. I also will calculate the speed for this machine. It has 3 options and I am currently using the center pulley. Thanks again.

Just completed the 'rebuild' of my FranTom 10" Combo. It came with two installed grinding wheels and two spares. One of the installed wheels is labeled Lortone silicone carbide grinding wheel "Cascade". Max 4775 RPM, 6"x1"x1", LCG 100. The other wheel has no label but is obviously "smoother" than the 100. I plan to use these two wheels to get the feel of the grinder and to learn the basics (I hope). My questions: Can these wheels be dressed? If so, how? When I am ready to replace these wheels, do I go with Silicon Carbide or diamond wheels. I know that it's a matter of personal preference but am looking for your opinions and observations on the comparisons between CS and Diamond wheels. Hope to post some photos of the Combo soon. So far I have been pleased with this $150 purchase. Have only had to spend about $5 for a switch for the motor and will soon buy a replacement belt - probably link belts. Thanks for your input. dj

I am so thoroughly enjoying "sawing" into my Rio Grande agates from Mel last week. I've only cut into 3 so far and have found some beauty in each one. These are great rocks for a real good price!

Just opened and sorted through my box-o-rox (Rio Grande Agate nodules) from Sabre52. They are GREAT. Slabbed one and it is excellent. Gray, Maroon, Yellow, Black. Beautiful. Thank you so much Mel.

Hello folks,
I joined about two weeks ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I have a home made polisher and an old, old, home made 6" saw. Just purchased a FranTom 10 saw/grinder combo. Will have many questions as I go into the process of refurbishing the FranTom. Thanks also for the friendly, helpful attitude here. BTW where the heck did the name andy321 come from : ) Don
