Don, I like it a lot. Very creative thinking!!! I bought a $40 tile at the Harbor Freight black friday sale that I hope to get online soon. But, I need something to do some shaping with and this looks like it might just fill the bill. Is the dishwasher motor waterproof or otherwise user friendly for using around water or is it just what you happened to have handy? Thanks, Not sure if the motor is waterproof. I try to keep it dry. The drawing does not show (and I failed to explain) that I glued a collar inside the main pan. The motor shaft comes up through the collar, and this keeps water in the pan from getting on the shaft or the motor. Works well as long as the drain water flows out - have had no problems with that. The 30, 50, and 100 grit pads do remove a lot of rock. Very good (aggressive) for initial shaping. If I could change or improve anything about this set up, it would be to improve the way I have to swap pads. They tend to wobble sometimes and get off center - which make the set up NOISY. So I stop and re-position them on the velcro. Much quieter and less vibration which is good for the machine and my ears. I also use ear plugs so as to not go more deaf than I already am. (17 years in a Georgia Power Company coal fired generating plant - many of them before ear protection was required!) dj

Love these pictures - thanks for sharing. Around here we have white tale and tons of them. Milledgeville, right ?? Yes, serious deer zone. the clay piedmont sure supports deer well. Yes, and turkey, fox, possum, racoon, armadillo, and I believe (though I can't prove it) aardvarks : )

Still playing with the digital microscope. Designed and installed a "light cover" to dim the l.e.d.s that illuminate the scope viewing area. Less glare and better focus. Agate normal view Close up view Close up view 2

Thanks much, rockjunquie. I've been carving a lot longer than rockin'. Have tried to incorporate carving with displaying polished stones. Sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't. I've a few more to post as I finish them. Don

Greetings from a fellow newbie! (Middle Georgia) Been a member for a couple of months. This has been the most fun forum - friendly, helpful folks willing to give advice, opinions and just plain conversation about a subject we all are interested in. A very encouraging group of people. Also a good place to purchase slabs and rough if you run out of drive ways and rock beds (see Sabre52). Enjoy. Don

First cousins grew up in Russellville. Their father, my uncle, was Superintendent of a large mine underground limestone quarry in the 60s and 70s. We visited when I was a teen and it was awesome to drive into the side of a mountain and find a humongous quarry!
I also have a cousin and friends of friends in Athens, AL. Haven't been there since about 1976.
Beautiful country. Lousy roads. : )

Thanks for the story and photos. Having lived in GA all my life and relatives in North AL, all of this looks familiar and homey.

((My very wet but very efficient slab face polisher, 100-200-400-800-1500-3000. $4 pads. All spinning on cheap Walmart 3600 RPM grinders with home made face plates. Pads glued to face plates with a good bit of pressure. Great for fast polish of flat faces. Maybe the black 50 grit pad would shape fast. Pads last a long time on agates, not so long on concrete. Wish I had a set of 10-12 inch pads.
Note double ground fault))
I have a couple of 30 grit pads - use them and a 50 to final "preform" (maybe not the right word) when I finish on the 100 grit 8" sc wheel.
Where do you find pads for $4 ?
Thanks for this input, I am just starting to get to the "buffing" part of this hobby. And will have more questions about that aspect of it all. thanks again/

I have selected around 70 free form cabs completed in the last year. They've been sitting in boxes with not much to do. I have tried wire wrapping and hate it. I am pretty good with my hands but have NO talent in this area.
I've posted links to photos in the "Members Photographs" area - if you are interested.
Am looking for someone who likes wrapping and is in need of cabs. Anyone? Anyone at all? Thanks.

No problem at all. This one I am proud of - not just the rocks but the wooden base. Finished sanding it last night and will stain tonight.
I'll post "final" photos when finished.
I've used Picasa and Google + off and on for several years and find it (Picasa) easy to use. Google + confuses the crap out of me so I use it less.
