The rubies and sapphires should be facet grade in the 1-3 carat range. Local value is $75 per carat on those and $ 30 for garnets. That's all I could afford to have cut. No net camera assess at the moment.

I don't have the power tools to cut, grind and polish. Can I use a multi grit set of diamond stones and work these by hand? If not would anyone like to cut and oolish and keep 50% of the finished gems? I also have stuff like moonstone, quartz and tourmalne that needs refining. There isn't much lapidary business within driving distance, and they've gone up in price. willing to accept the possibility of damage. They are not creating revenue sitting in a bag.

My dog and I went to Doc's Rocks in Blowing Rock, NC. Our take was similar. Properly cut--NC rubies and sapphires are worth about $75 per carat. I got $25-30 for cut Garnets. It will be interesting to see how many gems come from the big one.

OK the wife said she wants a jasper pendant made that has the appearance of blood in it or streaks of deep reds in it. What kind of jasper would have the best blood red colors ? Or is there a chert or agate that would be better suited for such a Halloween

So... I used a propane torch that wouldn't stay lit. It's new out of the box. I was unable to get butane for the mini-torch. Maybe a vape store will have some. The pendant did fine. The ear dangles were not. One survived while the other melted somewhat. Overall, it was a good learning experience. I'll treat myself to more clay if I see a sale.

Ring broke in two. It will become a set of curved ear dangles. I'll need to order a thicker ring mold. Accidents can produce real beauty once you look past failure.

So, I made my first silver pmc ring last night. It snapped off on the bottom. It will still work as a 4/5th round. I was shaping too hard. I also designed a pendant. They will get torch fired in a few days. I'm not ready for stone setting yet, but it was a good experience. Pictures at some point. Thanks for the support.

Looks like it's from a 1958 monster movie: The Blob.

Have one in my front yard that' 4" or so long. Looks like a black & yellow garden spider. I have long legged, small bodied closet siders inside. They help with gnats and fles. I spray Off where they are not allowed.

I'm feeling more confident. I got a ring mold that adjusts for shrinkage, plus a ceramic plug to keep the inside diameter my size. I'll do a test ring before adding the ruby.
I've been sticking with wire wrapped rings and a few sets of earrings. A friend gives me good feedback. She has a shop downtown. She is evaluating a ring made with brass. If it wears well she might buy some of my pieces outright. She doesn't do commission work. She would pay me 50%. She thinks the rings will go for $15-20 each. I'll be happy with $7.50-10 per on my end. I can easily make five rings an hour. I buy the wire by the pound. The stones, etc. are bought at a discount. Few rings cost mor than 50 cents to make. I enjoy the process so labor isn't an issue.
