Thank you all for your kind words. Memories will never replace interaction but at least we have that much left of him. Sorry for your loss! ๐

We just got our Foredom in this week, then set up a little workstation in our garage.ย Here's a couple of pictures, including Manthing taking a turn on it. So far, I'm absolutely in love.ย And I've named her Vera.ย We've got a couple of not so good pieces of fire agate we are practicing on until we feel like we can touch some of the nicer pieces without destroying them. A little bit of googling last night shows me that cabbing other materials with the Foredom is not only possible, but a lot of people started out that way until they could afford a proper cabbing machine.ย So I'm looking to you all to share any information that you are willing to part with... I don't know what I don't know. And I hate making stupid mistakes because I don't know what questions to ask. I know I probably need to start out with a large cutting disc, then put the handpiece in a vise and use it as a flat lap for coarse grit shaping, but I don't know where to go from there. Any suggestions? Thanks for the thread Jet - looks like a great work area - being a music lover I especially like the large speakers overhead This interest me from a different standpoint - I have been thinking about using my foredom on hard agate cabs that take forever to get the initial scratches out for someone like me with tendonitis and arthritis in both hands and wrists. Basically I'm thinking shape it, dome it, smooth it out on the wheels then work out the surface with the foredom then going back to the polish wheels. My problem is I have no clue about the best sanding bits to use with something like that. And for the record ... stupid mistakes are my best method of learning new things LOL. I learn a great deal from making mistakes, as well, Tommy!

Do you like the looks of this yes or no. If it's a no don't hesitate to tell me - I can take it. This is a first cab from a material that we found out in the desert on our way to Utah. We pulled off the freeway and down a long dirt road towards some hills just looking for a spot to rest and eat lunch and let the dog run around. Of course that was soon followed by rockhounding when we noticed this brecciated rhyolite type material laying around as float. We picked up several fist size pieces just as a sample to see if it was something that would be lapidary grade and it is. Holds together very well - the agate in between is somewhat pitted but seems to adds character. Overall it takes a great shine. I guess the true test will be if it sells or not and I don't see us making a special trip to get more but it's interesting and fun finding something new. I love it! I'm partial to browns! It's very pretty!!!

I'm saying those green gems aren't peridot. Google spessartine garnet and look at the crystal shapes. melhill1659Sure will, thankcha. I was just certain they were purdy. But very happy to learn! jeannie cabbing yet Scott? I'm still only cabbing on Tuesdays. We always have too many things to do on the weekends for the building to be completed. Eventually, we will be there! I have faith!๐

Life is good! So many things make me smile! The smell of star jasmine in the air, molten lava cake, being alone with the person I love, good times with family and friends, Tuesday nights when I get to work on my cabochons, otters, vacations.....And, yes, Scott @shotgunner, I know lots of things that make you smile too!

We added two new boulders to our stash at the sandstone quarry north of St. George. Scott says this is the fullest his truck has ever been. ๐So fun. Now heading back to Cali. I hoped you would! Are they worth it? we think so!!! Easy little jog off the freeway!

I'd love to learn how to do this! I still haven't tried it but I think vegasjames had the right idea. Drill it then shape it and dome it. I think I would probably shape it, round the corners and just toss it in the vibe. Thanks! Walt manofglass said the same thing.
