also, many jades WILL scratch with a knife depending on the matrix; some jade has soft non translucent outside which will scratch while inside is rock hard and won't. I have quality jades that have fractures, and some will scratch near those fractured parts. It is a very primitive base test for testing jade but def not a guarantee by any means. If you scratch test a handful of different rocks you will find that many of them won't scratch but leave a metal streak.

i have a lot of jade and seen a lot of different qualities, there are so many types of green stones that look similar- I personally don't think it looks like jade, unless its just of a lower quality. For instance clear creek jade, its jade, but doesn't have much eye appeal. I would try cutting them and see how it looks without the weathered surface you may be surprised.

i am really interested in learning to facet but the machines are so expensive and it seems the cheap vintage ones are not nearly as "easy" to use as the new tech ones

Hello - a late introduction from joining. I have used RTH almost exclusively when dialing in my lapidary equipment and looking for hard to find answers/odd questions. What a great resource!
Anyway, Im a 30 yr old male, been into lapidary and rock collecting for several years. I used to have a HP b12 with bumper wheels and SC wheels, felt polishing. Sold and last year I have accumulated and refurbished equipment. I now use a star diamond super GP8 (2 diamond, 2 expandos), a 10" star diamond, an 18" frantom, 8" flat lap, trim saw, genie, star diamond tumbler, lortone ns8 dual arbor. Oddly enough most of the equipment besides the frantom is in the unused side of my kitchen. I amassed this set from old timers and great deals here and there.
I have a strong passion for rockhounding, my favorites are marcasite and sagenite, and jade to collect. I like a lot of agates and not to forget opals , sunstones, and fire agates. I frequently go and free dive for jade in big sur have gotten a lot of great stuff from there and big sur is just great. Im always open to new collecting places, I like going to acton, nipomo, malibu beaches. Locally i have gotten a lot of agatized whale bone and other varieties. I have a great collection of jade, schiller sunstones, fire agate, opals etc that i am selling ( and plan to sell here when I reach the necessary post #. '
Very much appreciate all of you have offered help and advice , I have been searching here for years had an account about 4 years ago, but now back on board. Thanks for all the good info and atmosphere.
Stephen

i was planing on cutting off chunks and do SG tests for them. i thought #3 and #5 were some type of jade possibly from clear creek area - this was suggested to me, it would help to cut slabs to see the stone true without rough . any suggestions are appreciated. thanks.

I've seen pieces of maw sit sit, jadeite roughs that look like some of these. so many green stones.... so tough to identify compared to classic fibrous nephrite...been told some of these came from clear creek area but they didn't collect themselves.

Hello All, I got 5 stones recently and can not positively identify them, I've heard of some suggestions. One said ricolite, aventurine, californite, ammonite, and jadeite? Anyone with suggestions, knowledge or opinions - would be very appreciated! very odd the second rock has what looks like goldstone rind section (isn't goldstone manmade?) The 4th was suggested could be ricolite, but also clear creek material. stones 3,4,5 said possible could be clear creek jadeite. I have a bunch of other jade, the last rock #5 has some jade looking sections and has a serpentine like sheets on the rind in one section. I mostly collect nephrite, so not positive on any of these, but was told the last stone was some type of jade. All these stones except #4 are fairly translucent, but even the 4th stones has fragments of bright green translucent material. The rocks are broken up as rock 1 (photos 1-3), rock 2 (photos 4/5), rock 3 (photos 6-8) rock 4 (9-11), Rock 5 (12-16) Thanks for the help!!! Stephen ROCK1 ROCK2 Rock3 Rock4 Rock5 - more translucent than photos appear
