I'm surprised it tumbles so well. It looks like the little rocks would fall out of it.

52 degrees, windy, and raining here. But it's been nice (though cool) all week, so can't complain. I'll have to check the comp when I get home.

My rough looked similar to that pictured here. I think my rocks that i sent are larger than most of the finished ones I am seeing here. A couple of them I was really happy with, then i had to pick the best of the rest. They look great. Awesome photography. Just a hint of greatness there. hehehehe Critter sitting over or are you still deep in the dodo?
I was trying to find my pictures last night. I found most of them, except the last bunch I took of the finished product. (Naturally.) They may have gotten misfiled and are now lost in the depths of my computer. I was too tired last night to upload the pics I did find into Rockshow.
Oh yes, I am still deep in the crap, and it keeps on coming.
My mother and I were supposed to go gold panning on Wednesday or Thursday and now it looks like bad weather both days.

Good luck to everyone that got an entry submitted. There are probably good odds if you actually finished up and felt like entering. Looks like there was an element of luck, as far as the material was concerned. Maybe we'll have the trophy again, let's see... Thanks- Usually the hardest part of these contests for me is picking which 5 rocks to send at the end. This year it was just a marathon to try to get 5 rocks worthy of sending. I tried every trick in my little black book. Ran my best rocks several times trying several recipes. RTH has the trophy four years running. I am waiting for the year when we can lock in the top three spots. Chuck I'm on board with that!

I am quite new to this, and have not gotten foamy, so I don't know. There are different wavelengths to black lights and I can't remember which is which. If you have any sort of black light give it a try. Any fluorescence people out there?

Anybody know when they announce the winners? I know it's in September, but when? Early, middle--? Difficult stuff, I agree. I had one that took a bright polish on one side, and a matte luster on the other.

If it's already becoming rounded in 24 hrs i doubt if it's agate. Reminds me of hyalite opal. I have no idea if its in that area. Does it fluoresce?

One thing you'll want to do is keep the barrel about 70% full of "stuff". So if you're taking something out because those rocks are ready, you should add something in as filler. You can use more rocks, ceramic tumbling media, glass beads, or plastic pellets. The pellets are a pain and aren't usually used in the coarse grit.

I should add that I didn't have any of the actual specimens with me; I was just scouting to see if there was a market. So it's not like she could have gotten a "feeling" from the actual stones.

Well, I don't totally dis the whole thing, as there is so much that we don't know. So I try to keep an open mind, but I don't think I've ever bought a stone for it's (supposed) "Woo" power. It's "Wow!" power, yes.
Some people get really funny about it. I was in a little shop, looking at the beads and specimens, and I asked the proprietor if she would be interested in any specimens I had dug myself (probably apatites). She said no, she didn't purchase used specimens. I told her again that I had recently collected them from the ground myself; I had not bought them from anywhere. No, no, she did not want any "used" specimens. Starting to get a little ticked off, I asked her had she dug all these rocks herself? No. So she had to buy them from someone else? Yes, she said... 'but they aren't "used."'
I may as well been trying to reason from that geode from Brazil as try to get through to her. I gave up. Pretty sure she was smoking something anyway. I've never seen a grown-up count so slowly. Took her forever to tally my purchases.
If you DID believe in all that, wouldn't it be better to buy from a person who joyfully dug the specimen of her own free will, rather than from a middleman who bought it from some person slaving away in dreadful conditions for a pittance? I mean, wouldn't the stone pick up a lot of negative energy?

Buying rocks is OK! Many people buy rocks that they can't collect locally. Even the most ardent collector may be able to self-collect petrified wood from Oregon and Washington, but not Madagascar and Australia.
Tumbling stones that you have collected yourself adds another layer of satisfaction to the whole process, which is why we like to do it when we can. It's like eating vegetables from your own garden VS buying them at the grocery store or farmers' market.
As you learn more about which rocks take a nice tumble, you may be able to find some of your own. What area are you in?
