Guess I must be a true rockhead, I thought the dark side was beautiful too! (Of course, the "show" side is spectacular)

Better pictures would help. Looks like a few goodies in there. The oysters and big ammonites are from Texas. I know the names but not off the top of my head... I want to say Adkinsites? Most of the bones "look" fossilized to me, hard to tell without getting your hands on them (or at least better pictures).I think mostly deer bones, a bison bone or two, a large-diameter deer or elk antler base. There's some large bones that could be mammoth/mastodon, but resemble the whale bones I found in the Potomac, so could be marine mammal also. Very hard to tell about the little packages. Could be a fun lot if it's not too expensive and you've got the space to go through it.

Sorry, but I think you wouldn't have mentioned the man was black if color was not some of the issue. Man and a couple of women will work. No idea how much preparation they did. Bob gave a blow by blow so we know how much he did. Difficult to tell the two apart. NOT JUST FOR YOU lookatthat Probably the crappiest time in all their lives to be macho. captbob included. The way I see it Bob, the woman with the child that can not protect itself and pretty much all that stayed when they had a chance and the means to leave are playing Russian roulette with OTHER PEOPLES LIVES. I have been biting my tongue/fingers, not saying much but worrying about Bobs wife. Did she make her own choice whether to leave or not? Did she stay just to appease him? Did she have a say in the matter at all? Wouldn't be my place to say anything if no rescuers were put in harms way but we lost some brave people in most of the hurricanes when they were trying to save others and I have no doubt that some will be lost again. I do not wish anyone dead (yeah, even Bob) but a lot of people put three shells in the revolver instead of just one with this storm and there is going to be a lot of crying when the wind stops. Wish I could but I can not be indifferent so I keep checking back and worrying about all of the people in the path of this storm. By the way, Rush L has been calling this fake news all week and telling everyone to ignore it then jumped up and ran. BTW 2. Former living presidents got together to collect money for the Texas people in need and uninvited the twit in chief tried to include himself by tweeting "WE" when he mentioned it. Over and over and over he just keeps doing nothing but piss people off and the unpublicans just stay in lock step with their outside benefactors. SSSSCCCCRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM. JimOH MY GOD NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT RACE!!!! OR GENDER!!!! WHICH WAS EXACTLY MY POINT!!!!!!! We white people are told that being, or trying to be, color-blind is another form of racism... so I noted their differing colors on purpose, acknowledging both. If anything, you SHOULD be noticing that the common denominator was that all the people I mentioned were YOUNG. So could it be that I don't think young people are as smart/wise as older people? Perhaps so! Though I certainly do make exceptions to THAT rule. (Cough, cough, Jim). I am in fact an AGEIST! But you know what? That storm does not care what color (if any) a person is, what gender, what political party, how young/old, how smart/stupid, how prepared/not prepared... that storm will do exactly what it will do, and individuals and communities will have to deal with the consequences.

Dear lord, some people--! This young black guy on the TV this morning, south Florida, he wasn't worried at all. "There's nothing to be scared of," he says. "What's there to be scared of?" Does he think this is a Disneyworld ride?
Just to prove that stupidity has no color or gender, they then showed 2 white women, one with a baby on her hip, who also seemed unconcerned. "We've been through it all before," says one. She was, maybe, 25 years old.
How much preparations do you think these people made? And yet they'll expect others to risk their lives to come rescue them.

Usually land put a pretty good drag on a storm like this and cause it slow down and to break up, but because this storm is so wide I wonder if it will keep feeding off the energy from the ocean on both sides.

A lovely bunch of coconuts! OK, I know they're not all coconuts, but I couldn't resist. That's a really nice bunch, what fun

Here is my best pet wood find. It has a name - Peter Thomas. 28 inches and about 35 pounds. Yes, it is chained to a wagon wheel in the picture; I have it displayed in our geology exhibit. I found it covered in trash and rotten food in a trash heap outside a local auction house. They had tossed it out of an old car they were selling, thinking it was an ugly fireplace log. It also had flecks of paint on it when I found it, which I spent house flicking off with a pin.

That carving is just beautiful. So graceful and flowing.
I get asked actual dumb questions at work. Here is the best one (asked in mid-summer): "What day do the leaves turn?" After looking around for hidden cameras, I explained the whole science of fall color to her, including altitude, latitude, length of day, temperature, microclimate variations, etc. I showed her on a map where and when the first color typically appears at the end of September, illustrated how the color spreads down the spine of the Green Mountain range around the first week of October, and then into lower elevations, with the last color typically peaking in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of October in the Champlain valley. She looked at me in exasperation bordering on disgust, and asked again, "But what DAY do they turn?" So I looked her right in the eye and said, "October 2nd." She said, "Thank you!" in a less-than-polite tone, and stalked out. Every one else in the room was just staring. In retrospect, I probably should have said the 7th, but oh well.

Some of the stones I shaped a little with hammer and chisel, and broke the edges a little with a grinding wheel. Minimal shaping for most.

Hard to see from the small pic, but I think 3E is puddingstone. 3A doesn't feel like a rose quartz to me... has it gone down a lot in size in one week? If so, it's not quartz. I'm thinking calcite or maybe feldspar.

Oops, a little big. Took me a half hour to figure out how to post them. Here are some of my best. The 3rd one down has flaws, but the shine was so nice.
