Not sure what it is, but I recall finding this out in Wyoming as well. Always made me pick it up because it was green and I thought it could be jade. Probably just some jasper that has similar colors. I wasn't rock hunting out there so I never really gave it much interest but I'm sure someone here knows.

Do people actually lick rocks? I thought it was just a turn of phrase for people to make fun of pickers(rock lickers!). Luckily for me there is usually some water around for me to rinse stuff off, but I'll spit on stuff if I need to. I get enough sand and dirt in my mouth just walking around, thank you.
Just don't stick your face into any middens or lick any rodents either. Hantavirus and plague are no joke out west.

If you're looking for agates on a beach I suggest waiting for a big storm and looking around on a sunny day after that. A lot of beaches, at least in northern MN, get picked over by the influx of tourists. Also, if you don't mind getting wet, looking in the water can yield better results sometimes. I think I've even seen videos of people scuba diving/snorkeling for agates in Lake Superior. Maybe wait for a really warm day to try that, though.

Looks like a laker to me. Get it wet and you'll probably see more detail.

Sounds more like what I think of as a "cold water agate" which is probably fitting since Racine its pretty far south in Wisconsin.

I suppose we are all a bit mad, huh. At least my rocks don't talk to me....yet.

Maybe 4" x 3" x 3". Prob around 2 lbs, but I haven't weighed it. Yea everything looks pretty good when polished up, its just getting it to that point that's hard for me. At least when I get some equipment I know I'll have some decent material. From seeing some of your posts , I would say you have an eye for decent material . Haha maybe. I just look for agates mostly and sometimes i trip over these other things or get skunked and start picking up any rock in sight

Looks like chalcedony to me. Also free fingerprints, score! In a bucket marked grey & red opal .... I'm just a rock newb so don't take my word as gospel, but it looks a lot like some stuff I have. Sometimes pictures can be misleading though.

I don't have the equipment to cut things and my tumbler broke a while ago. This rock wouldn't fit inside it anyways. D: I'd imagine you could probably find this stuff anywhere the glaciers dropped stuff off so WI too(except driftless area).

Could be, but as usual when I google things nothing looks quite like what I have.

I'd say it probably depends on where it was found. Could be a hammerstone, although it does look awfully big. If I found that in MN I'd probably lean more towards a net weight, but I'm purely guessing.

I've had this thing sitting on a bathroom shelf for a while now and never really gave it much thought until I found a few stromatolite fossils last week. Material is probably rhyolite/jasper, but I was wondering if this patterning is caused by flow banding or some kind of fossil(eg. stromatolite, wood, etc). It doesn't really look like wood grain or a stromatolite, but I figured I would ask because I haven't seen flow banding this thin before. As usual, this specimen is from glacial till in MN. More pictures of dry specimen and other sides can be found here: imgur.com/a/wne4W
