Since I found my first nice fossil at the stream Leckbach, it was always in the back of my mind to go back there to try and find some more.
So last Thursday morning I decided to go back to the region where river Rißbach crosses from Germany into Austria... and transforms from a waterless river into a fast, wild and deep one.
Made a couple of stops at the river to document the landscape and check for stones... and fossiles.
After having spent some great time at the river, walking / climbing along the rocky riverbanks, I finally made it to the spot from where one can access a trail leading up the stream Leckbach.Went up there for quite a bit to access the stream from a point I had not already checked and work my way downstream.
This proved to be kinda adventurous as the water flowed quite fast and deep and I had to jump across the stream several times to be able to continue further down directly at the banks to look for fossiles.
The last hour or so rain started to pour down heavily and the adventure became a real challenge. All the rocks wet and slippery, the water faster and wilder, the rain, wind and temperatures around 46 °F did NOT improve the overall safety.
Finally I called it off. The whole thing simply became too dangerous.
One wrong step and the water would have just smashed me into rocks way harder then my bones and any chances of someone finding me in any reasonable time ... kinda zero.
I choose my trips to be alone and sometimes face some fears and challenges as it is very freeing when you overcome them... but I have responsibilities and there is also the "don't be downright stupid" factor.
Climbed up back to the trail and made the rest of the way back down to the car where I just sat for a couple of minutes, wrapped in a towel and enjoyed a nice, strong, hot Espresso out of my vacuum flask while listening to the sound of the raindrops on my car. It was a long day. (Spent over 10 hours in that region.)
It was a fun day. (Discovered plenty new, beautiful spots and a little adventure is always great.)
It was a exhausting day.
And I can't wait till I can go back out again to explore more of that region!
As for the picture displaying my finds:
Top row, stone 5 and 7, bottom row the big one on the right. They all seem to be the "same type".
Are those crystalized fossiles in the stones? Looks really weird to me. And yes those patterns cover the whole stone. The big red stone might also have a fossile embedded.
Curious for feedback / guesses on what those patterns might be though.
