Beautiful examples of sagenite. The one from the Calapooia River is really unique. Thanks for sharing!

Those are all amazing!!!! I can't even look at the rough without thinking what great cabs they would make!

Very nice. I have some specimens that came from old timers I knew who are long gone and it's amazing how nostalgic I feel when I look at them.

Those are all amazing!!!! I can't even look at the rough without thinking what great cabs they would make! Some of these 100% will get a slab taken off and turned into cabs. You don’t see a lot of sagenite cabs out there, compared to other agates with inclusions. At least as far as I’m concerned

Nice sagenite! I agree, sagenite cabs are pretty uncommon for whatever reason. You could remedy that with your next cab contest theme I Would…. However, it’s not a common material for people to have in their collections, and the variety of types that I have would make it unfair to others.

Gorgeous specimen pieces my friend! I love seeing cabs made out of sagenite material. They have a tendency to look like "fireworks" to me...

Naah - you know I'm envious not only because of the quality of what you post, but because of the family connection and the fact that you find things like this box of sagenite. You've got an incredible amount of local hounding history there, and I'm glad you're posting photos and background info for us all in your threads.
Didn't someone mention writing a book in an earlier thread...?

I'd buy one. The little I have read is just from random stories I've stumbled across online.

Beautiful stuff realrockhound . Look forward to seeing some of it cabbed. BUT it is unfair, First, we see photos of you digging unbelievable stuff out of the ground , and THEN you just happen to look under the bed & find an old box of Grandpa's. I'm afraid what's in the closet
Patty.... who has to import rocks !

realrockhound Neat find. My husband’s grandpa spent his life rockhounding in and around Sweet Home, directly west of the Quant claims. I wouldn’t be surprised if they all knew each other. I’m glad there is still an active enough group of people in this hobby to carry on what those old timers, and the ones before them, started. I bet many of us are connected in some unknown way through our past relatives who knew someone who knew another someone. It would be cool to know the ties.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if there were connections in some fashion. A lot of the old timers seemed to know each other. I remember before the internet was a thing when I was a kid, my grandpa used to know people in the hobby all over the state, and others in Washington, Idaho, etc..

Have you found much Holley Blue in your grandpa’s collection? Ours used to dig there before the area closed. We have a handful of nice pieces. Unfortunately when we cleared out their house we took only the obviously nice rocks… gems, already cut cabs, display pieces. If there were uncut chunks of rough, I wouldn’t have known what I was looking at, what potential they may have had hidden inside them. Now I kick myself and wonder what we left behind.

I have over 5 pounds of it in the rough. I can post pics tomorrow if you’d like.

realrockhound Nice. Have you cabbed much of it? Now I feel like I should gather up all of ours. Not nearly as much, but a few nice chunks like this. Unfortunately I am currently poorly organized. It's a work in progress, this hobby. Thanks for sharing!
