Crap! Are you saying working Mary Ellen is a sonofagun?? Well, Jason, it's hematite and a fossil jasper. How solid it is you won't determine until you have a near-perfect backing and it splits in two. Then when you try to rescue it, it splits in two again. It's kind of like Gary Green--some of it does just fine, and then there's the piece you're working. . .&)*&^&! I've been told when the greenish stuff migrates in it is more difficult, and I think that is what I was working. It's been awhile. Check this out: photocontest.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/detail/mary-ellen-jasper-stromatolite/The barbed wire is fairly easy to make--it's pretty much in the proportions so I made some messes when I started experimenting with it but I have conquered it now! And if you really want to part with the poop cab I will find another slab. It has warmed up, and I now can actually jump over the avalanche in front of the door to my shop. Patty, I couldn't get to what you sent--the link just took me to Etsy. OMG! That picture in that link is unbelievable!! The Mary Ellen Jasper I have looks NOTHING like that!! Mine is that normal deep red. That piece in the link is breathtaking! It reminds me of a piece of Pietersite I'm working on! I don't want anything extra for that cab. I'll just send it back with the obsidian.

Thank you Susan for clearing that up and showing a prime example of it.
And I thought stromatolite only came in subdued colors.
It was an etsy link for "Miniature Barbed Wire for Dollhouse, Train Scenery, Diorama, Crafts". But it sounds like you're already making it, and not too difficult to make with a little practice.

There was a woman here who made wire wrapped pendants with pseudo barbed wire. I think they looked awesome, but I would hate to wear them. Talk about snagging.

That has been my concern with them as well! I suppose if someone wore them on a choker chain to keep them higher on the neck, it wouldn't be "AS" likely to snag...

I just did a search and found a couple, but they aren't the ones I was thinking of and I can't remember her name. DOH!

Thanks so much, Jason. I'm getting back to my slab hunt today; and am much more systematic about it. Truth be told, you create such great cabochons with great material, that it's a pretty high bar to find something you will like/use! Now on to the bailing wire . . .

I could "ball" the ends, but it will still snag. Or I could put all the "barbs" on top, which would likely be partially successful, but probably won't look like barbed wire. Or maybe my "barbed wire" will look more like a pinwheel. Just thinking out loud, and also thinking I'm glad I have a "worthless scrap-wire" bin! Patty, *most* Mary Ellen doesn't look like that. I don't think I have ever seen in person any that looked like that. But Wow! What a thought. . .

I mean the whole purpose of barbed wire is to "snag" something...or poke something to keep it away from the wire. *Thinking as I'm typing too...what about "looping" the barb, so it's a small loop back on itself? That would eliminate the "poking"...but I don't think it would solve the snagging necessarily. Of course looping the wire might end up making it look like one of these! LOL

I found an image of one of the barbed wire pendants. It was done by Talkingstones

I found this one (https://forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/19301/barbed-wire): This is the one by BikerRandy that I had stuck in my head (https://forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/19298/got-bored-morning):

Jason, thanks for all the "food for thought." The curling it back on itself was what I considered the "pinwheel" effect. But I've got some ideas which won't go further until I actually see the cab. And--I've got some ideas for what to send you. Sending pm.

Thanks Adrian! I was going through a bunch of old threads and ran across your "yin yang" cabs. I was stunned to say the least! I'd love to make some of those one of these days! I am sure your yin/yangs would come out beautiful, Jason!

I am sure your yin/yangs would come out beautiful, Jason! Thanks for the vote of confidence Adrian. I was thinking...I wonder if using the bit on the Gryphon Gryphette would be as effective as using a Dremel bit. I literally just thought of that as I was typing thanks to you! The Gryphette should ensure a perpendicular cut to the bottom of the cab...hmmm...I might have to give this a shot!

I especially like the first one, both shape & pattern. It reminds me of water coming over a waterfall, and both the pattern & shape add to that impression.
Peace, Rich

I'm going to keep that first one in the arsenal. I've got a Pietersite cab lined up with that shape. The dome is going to be a LOT higher...so we'll see if that works out.

I'm not familiar with the meaning of the brands you mention, but I'm sure you will chose the best way. The fact you have in mind details such a perpendicular cut instead a slightly curved one says a lot.

The fact you have in mind details such a perpendicular cut instead a slightly curved one says a lot. It's actually a glass cutting tool...but if you get the right bit for it, it can be used to cut grooves for groove wrapping. I'm not sure how you cut your grooves for your groove-wraps... It has bits like the one pictured below which could be used for the concave portion of the yin yang symbol. I figure taking the diameter of the bit, and doubling it, it should give the diameter of the overall circle of the cab. I was actually in your yin yang threads about 20 minutes ago contemplating the calculations above!
