Thanks everyone for the replies. I've picked up the horse laxative at the local feed store just to give me a top off and reach my pump. It does seem pretty thin which is good. Then I'll pick one of the above and go with it.

QuailRiver looks like citgo also sells a clarion 70 that is lower viscosity, the 90 is just above the top I would use. That said, any food grade, or medical, cosmetics, tech (veterinary) grade will not thicken over use as much as the old transformer oil did. Oh, but that price, and a whopping 22.12 discount to buy a 55 gallon drum, Kevin will sell me a drum for just a little over half that, delivered.

I've been using the 90 viscosity for I believe about 12 years now with saws ranging in size from 10" to 20" and have no complaints. As mentioned in my previous post distributors' prices are all over the place so it pays to shop around. The last 55 gallon drum I purchased was from Hutchen's Petroleum out of Stuart, VA. The 55 gallon drum was $583.52 including sales tax, and delivery surcharge (80 miles). At the time they had by far the best price I could find in the mid-Atlantic states for any suitable white food grade oil.

When you say "old" transformer oil, I hope you didn't mean the oil that had PCBs in it.

When you say "old" transformer oil, I hope you didn't mean the oil that had PCBs in it. Some people on the forum may have been cutting before 1979 and got exposed to PCB's, I personally didn't really get far enough down the rabbit hole to have a slab saw till sometime shortly after 2000. The club was getting recycled transformer oil when I first got involved with the shop, a member had access to it by the drum and it was very cheap. It may have had like 1 or 2 ppm PCB's in some removed from really old transformers, well below the threshhold even in CA, but that threshhold was not set for aerial mist, so now we may have an explanation why old lapidaries are like that...

Silly question here but how often would you clean out a drop saw?

Silly question here but how often would you clean out a drop saw? When your pump quits working. 😋 Periodically scrap the sludge out with a putty knife, it will help extend the life of the oil and the frequency of a complete clean out.

Ironically, the pump costs about as much as 2 gallons of NF 70 Mineral Oil
