First off I can identify it’s a beautiful Jasper. I’m wondering… Is it a named Jasper? Thanks

But there is so much variety in that material, that I could be a possibility. Wouldn’t be the first time his material has gotten out there and I found out about it years later lol

realrockhound - the "kaleidoscope jasper" is from somewhere around Prineville, right?
I wonder if your grandpa might have found similar material somewhere in the same geological conditions in that area back then. The variety of colors and color combos is similar to the later find. If you know roughly where your material was found, you could see how far the two are from each other.

It is. However I have no clue where the Chinese jasper came from. All I know is that it started show up on the property when my grandpa was building logging roads off China hat road back in the 60’s

Cool. I've heard of old China Hollow, and that it was really good, but if I am remembering the right stuff it looked different in photos I saw.
The variety of what you have could mean grandpa found all the REALLY good stuff before anyone else, eh?
Is China Hollow a different area than where you are describing?

China hollow is in the same vicinity as Biggs jasper, and looks fairly similar. China hat area is approximately 3 hours away south of China hollow. The kaleidoscope mine is also a ways away. I have heard one B.S story that was told to me by a guy who knew my grandpa, but it is so unbelievable I don’t trust it. I’m going to put some slabs up for sale here on the forum soon if people are interested.

realrockhound - we "need" enough of that for me and Robin, too!!!
I thought our friend Max was talking about the China Hollow near Biggs. He's also gone now, so I have to rely on memory for what he told us.
Maybe someday you'll be able to get some more clues from other people you know up there about that "BS" story. With your skills maybe you could hound out a source for more similar material someday.

The BS story about the Chinese jasper was told to me by people who both knew my grandpa. It involved a big landslide in the ochocos and the material being packed out by mules. If you saw the size of some of the pieces, there ain’t a snowballs chance in hell mules were packing them out. My dad said he remembered the material showing up on the property around the time my grandpa was cutting those logging roads roads I mentioned previously. Said my grandpa would come home with the bed of the truck loaded to the gills and drop it off outback. Logging roads is how a lot of the material around here was found. I know one more guy I could ask that would more than likely know. But I need to do it asap because he’s on his way out sadly.

I'm just really learning about named stuff. But I recently tumbled some Paul Bunyan agate- not a good idea- and some of it looks quite similar

With these beautiful colors and solid I’m thinking it’s old stock from Oregon or a similar state. I haven’t seen a purdier rock in a long time!!!
