I'm unsure which you are calling as an agate. The little black one could be but. They are indeed interesting patterns in the cherts.

It is indeed an agate, complete with shadow banding. Almost looks like a Bot. Quite a surprise to find locally. I pulled it from the large batch tumbler because I don’t want it to get smashed and am tumbling it with the LSAs I have going. When it’s done here in 4-5 more days I’ll take better pictures of it.

thanks! It had to be that one but curious minds wanted to see if they were missing something.

I love chert too! I really like the agate find and the banded iron.

I've collected Texas cherts around Bandera, TX and many of those looked similar to what you have illustrated in this thread. Sometimes an interesting fossil will turn up just to keep you collecting and polishing in hopes of more.

Sometimes an interesting fossil will turn up just to keep you collecting and polishing in hopes of more. Quite a few of these I found on the Llano river. Others on the Guadalupe. We have found so many small fossils in our hunt for rocks! My stepdaughter particularly loves fossils, so I have a box of them she’s collected. My favorite is the fossilized coral that I’ve been finding. Originally I was mistaking it for petrified palm wood lol. I was thrilled when I found out what it really was.

Those are cool. Will they ultimately take a high polish or be more of a matte sheen?

Velo, you'd be in 7th heaven collecting rocks out here in South Dakota! I think every other rock out here looks like that banded chert!! khara - if his is anything like the chert we have out here, it'll shine as well as Ohio Flint!

Some are starting to look a bit interesting though, like they are something besides chert. No idea how those will polish. It’s really fun regardless, not unlike opening a present lol.

If you ever want to do a pound for pound trade I’ve got quite a bit of petrified wood, red jasper, petrified sponge things and so on. I’ve been doing this with a few guys on my RC Forum this last 6 months. Except instead of sending them rough rock in return, I’ll send RC parts, wire jewelry and/or polished rocks lol. That’s how I got that little bag of Lake superior agate. I find it funny that I get excited about getting a box of rocks from somebody that has no idea what they’re collecting, as opposed to what I buy from the gym shop or a rock shop.

Those are some great looking pieces of chert! My family often collects rocks and fossils in the central Texas area. I'd love to see pictures of the fossilized coral you've found! We find lots of fossils, but have never found fossilized coral. I'd like to know what to look for!

First, nice piece of coral you posted!! If you'll give me a couple days, I'll get some pictures of the milk crates full of Prairie Agates I have. They're not really agates...that's just the name of them. They're actually banded chert or banded jasper. If that's something you're interested in after seeing the pics, we can work something out. I will warn you, everyone who has tumbled these knows they take a LONG time to tumble because they're SO freakin' hard...but boy do they shine amazingly well!! (They're one of those materials that IF you have a way to "pre-grind" them, it saves a bunch of time tumbling.)

Haven’t heard about or seen those yet. I love rocks that take forever, more room for fixing errors lol. I have not tried any pre-grinding yet. But I have slowly gathered together the basic tools for it, so need to try. Thanks again!
