beefjello - Brian, thank you for the information. It's hard for me to wrap my head around it as well...however...I don't know how many stories I've heard of family pets which have gone off into the woods to pass away alone. NOT that I'm saying Ed was an animal...just VERY close to nature and the universe...so a part of me can see Ed choosing to do the same. I too hope there was a hospice worker there to hold his hand...to listen to his final thoughts and words...to give him a smile, which is what I believe brought Ed the most happiness in life.

beefjello Thank you so much for the update. It is bittersweet news. But somehow helps to know. Closure. I’m so glad too to hear that his brothers are taking him home. It is obvious he loved Arizona, but to have family that still care and want to do something special in a place from his early years, I think that’s nice, full circle. It’s nice too he’ll ultimately be remembered both in his first home by his family, and his last home, by his friends. Brian I bet you are right! I got the impression Ed never met a stranger. He probably made some caretaker friends right at the very end.

Brian beefjello thank you. It puts my mind at ease a bit knowing he was in hospice and had someone there with him. I'm so glad his family is taking care of him. It was so like Ed to not want to put anybody out. I think you're right. Ed is probably smiling down on us and is probably pretty proud that his RTH family and his brothers unraveled his mystery. I think he knows now how much he meant to us.

I haven't been on the forums much lately but what a total shock to read about Ed. I am more than willing to contribute to whatever form of memorial/service that is planned.
Someone should find a Ladmo bag for his ashes, if they even exist anymore. I feel like Ed would love that.

It sounds like his family will be dealing with his remains, but anything I can do once we return in July I will do, and I want to be there when they place a zoo memorial as well.

Bear with us. This is how it stands right now... This thread will be updated as we get new info.
Ed has family who are trying to drum up the funds to take care of Ed's final arrangements. I have given my contact information over to the decedent's office to give to them. I have no clue if they will contact me or not. But, I will feel them out as far as their intentions. Who knows... this could turn into a fundraiser for THEM to take care of him. Frankly, if his family really desires to handle his arrangements then I think we should help, should they need it. Everything is fluid right now. Because Ed's family is trying to get this done, there is no time frame for when WE may have the opportunity, as an interested party, to do the right thing. So, if Ed's family CAN come through, then we will be raising money for a brick or bench or something, if they don't, then we will be raising the money to have him cremated. OR, it may turn out that we will be helping HIS FAMILY pay. .... OR even yet, if neither us nor his family pay the bill, Ed will still get a grave in a pauper's cemetery with a plaque. It's not all that bad and it IS somewhere that his family could visit. In that case, we would raise money for the zoo. I was told by the decedent's office that the bill at the mortuary is 1200. I have not called the mortuary about the bill because I think, at this point, they are strictly working with the family. But, if I need to, I will. Another point to consider... We will be asking for volunteers to help pick up Ed's ashes if need be. He will be in Phoenix. The ROUGH plan right now, IF we are doing the arrangements, is to have someone collect and hold Ed's cremains until Quartzite when an RTH BBQ group can give him a send off and scatter his ashes. Alternatively, the mortuary may be able to hold the urn for awhile. So, they would just need to be picked up by Q time. So, if anyone is interested in doing that- post here or send one of us a PM. I think I covered the bases. This was necessarily sketchy at best because we're not sure how we will be proceeding, yet. Watch this thread for updates.
UPDATE 6-17 Also- In case anyone missed it- You can sign a Tribute to Ed if you are so inclined. I'm sure the family would appreciate it. Update 6-21
We're still waiting to hear something from Ed's family. When we know something, we'll pass it on right away. Thank you to everyone who has pledged donations. Now we know we'll be able to do what we decide to do. Update 6-24
Update 6-26
I had a very nice conversation yesterday with Ed's older brother, Richard. Because Ed was listed as indigent, the paperwork at the state level is being held up. They do not have a death certificate. As many of you know, nothing happens without it. So, although I was very glad to speak with Richard, nothing has changed really. We are still in holding mode. Richard will call with updates. I pointed him here, as well. He was interested to know what Ed did.
Hello, my name is Michael Arnaud I'm Ed Arnaud's younger brother, I joined your forum and di an initial post because I couldn't find this one. I hope it's ok that I joined I just wanted to share some new information on where thigs stand with Ed and maybe get some information from those of you that knew him. We didn't know he was part of this forum till just recently or I would have been here sooner. Before I go any further, I want to be sure I'm not offending anyone by being here, so I'll wait to see if there are responses to either post. Thank you, Michael

I just spoke to Ed's younger brother Michael arno58 for about an hour. We had a great conversation. He wanted to make sure you all know how incredibly thankful he is for everything- not the least of which is for all of your touching tributes and memories. Ed's time here at RTH was mystery to his family. They had no idea. Michael is heartened by the fact that his loner brother had friends that loved him. Michael asked me to share this PM he sent to me. I have edited it a little to remove phone numbers and what not. He will be actively working with the board to determine Ed's final arrangements.

When Tela and I spoke the AM, when we found out Ed had passed, I did a Facebook post and included this photograph my wife (Pam) took a few years ago of Ed. I though you all might like to see it.

Thanks so much for your story, Ed will always be missed, but never forgotten. He had a unique way to make a day better, everyone here on the forum would probably agree.

Thank you arno58 for including us in this final journey. Until I met Ed I didn't think "gregarious yet reserved" could be a thing, yet there it was. As I shared in another thread, our trip to the NW and back to clear our storage is memorable, and I can say that in the discussions we had he had nothing negative to share about family, he blamed himself for his distance. Once we're home in a few more days and I find the right memory card from my old camera, I'll create a photo thread of everything I have and be sure to tag you on it, we have several from the weekends he spent out at our place and from the trip.

arno58 Thank you so much for sharing your story Michael. It is bittersweet but I’m glad to know it. It’s nice to have a vision of a family to attach to Ed before he found this bunch of rockhounds.
