Looks like it came from the beach. I have not tried it myself. Have you seen the Michigan Rocks video on tumbling glass? Now you need to break something that has color. Lol

This did have color it was just superficial unfortunately. I will be doing some Stainglass at work here soon, turning it into sea glass, I’ll make sure to share that with you. I don’t think the process has to be so involved to make sea glass. Just a round of 60/90 until it is smooth on the edges and frosted is all you need. Running it just as you would with rock.

Most of the "ocean glass" out there is glass tumbled to 220 I think. We have put it in with obsidian before.

I’ve done this once. It was a fun little project and I could see doing it again. We collected bottles for a while of varying colors. Broke them in a big garbage bag and tumbled away. It makes for a pretty little display mix or background for photos. Maybe I’ll post some pics… Ashley, I can’t remember, are you a vibratory tumbler person? We just have rotaries.

kharaPlease do post some pictures I would love to see them! I have both rotary and vibe. I use the rotaries for shaping and then go to the vibe for 120 through polish. I’ve done a few rotary only batches but I like the instant (in a week or week and half) gratification of vibes. At home, for now, I have two nat geo rotaries (don’t make fun of me people, I actually think they’re pretty good machines and they have awesome customer service!) a Rebel 17, and a lot-o. My daughter has a lortone 33-b. I am hoping to get a UV-10, 18, or 45. They are awesome machines. At work I use three thumblers model B’s for rotary, a mini-sonic, double lot o, three UV-10, a UV-18, and a UV-45. (Side note, one of the “UV-10’s” is actually from a different company called Grobet USA but the are identical except the Grobet has two “spouts” on it that we just plugged with a screw. So far it runs the same as the thumblers brand.)

Great idea! I haven’t tried tumbling glass yet, but I’d like to.

Ashley, you're getting a lot of experience with a lot of different machines and rocks. That's cool.

kharaI have been thinking about tumbling glass and putting it in cool bottles just like you have. Those bottles are really cool looking! I need to find a source of cool colored glass!

dillonf Ya, I think you just have to start keeping an eye out and collecting. Probably figure several months to gather up enough. I think the trick will be identifying which are coated. I will say that I put a jar in the dishwasher a while back and the colored coating started peeling off so maybe the dishwasher is a quick way to determine if glass is actually colored rather than coated. Or maybe simply a scratch test. Some good options are old candle holders or decor from your home or garage sales or the thrift store and wine/specialty drink bottles. Probably the more vintage the better to find colored rather than coated glass. 👍 Oh, the display bottles I have, I think I just got those from the local craft store. They’d be cooler if they were vintage, but you can find things like this pretty cheap at crafty places.

Ashley, thanks. I did not cut that cab but I did do the silver setting. I have collected a bit of the original old stock Fordite but there really wasn’t ever very much rough available so I mostly collected cabs from people who did have a stash of the old stock material.

ashley Thanks :-)! It's my 4th of July pendant! I made it on the 4th years ago. I usual prefer to have my holiday day off tucked away in my shop than at some party! I was actually just noticing how I'd do some things different with it today. Which is good. And it's now pretty tarnished. I'm planning to clean it up and maybe do a new patina on it.
