rockjunquie , Tela, I almost feel silly saying "sometimes simple is better" to you, since you're often the guru of these words. But the words fit--and this is one of those times it's better. The shark's tooth doesn't need much in the way of adornment, it's its own special ceature.

Yeah, I guess my tastes are pretty obvious, but it is true that the tooth would lose it's beauty smothered in wire.

It's done! It's done! Tumble-polished amethyst crystals converted into a future pendant (necklace will attach to the loops on the right and left) and earrings. I also added a piece of the chain that will make up part of the necklace. The earrings were relatively easy, although they don't match, in large part because the points don't match. The pendant, well, it is a slippery little bugger, and my design theme for the pendant quickly morphed into "how do I fix that?" I tried a lot of new techniques with this, including using 26-gauge wire to "bind" since I wasn't sure if half round would work well with different gauges of wire. It was not a good idea. I also tried weaving the wires together--not a good idea, but it increased my scrap pile nicely. Finally, I'm going to *try* to fix that twist on the back, but I don't have high hopes for success, and I need to work harden the pattern wire loops as well as general cleanup including tightening loose binding wires. **26-gauge wires do not behave as well as half round as I now know. The beads on the pendant are amethyst--the first photo is the back which somehow snuck in first.

susand24224 - Susan, I really like that design on the wrap! I've used 26 and 28 gauge wire to hold decorative loops in place...and you're right...the 26 can be a bear! Great choice on the main wire...I like that "print" in the wire! The earring are spectacular as well. I don't think them not matching is an issue. The design is the same...and because they're left in their "close to natural shape", I think the difference is to be expected. Plus, their on opposite side of someone's head...so no one will likely even notice they're not identical. Beautiful material too by the way!!

I like it Susan & in fact I think the pendant could be reversible - you lose the beads, but it's a different nice look just the same. I like the chain, the texture of it adds nicely to the design.
You're overly critical on yourself- it looks great - earrings to match and all, impressive with tumbled rounded stones.

susand24224 Very nice. I think the earrings look great. Since stones are natural they don’t have to match perfectly to look good. Sounds like you went through a lot of trouble shooting and likely learning on this set which will only help you on the next ones.👍👍 I still have yet to find time this month.

The 26 gauge just simply doesn't stay put. It doesn't care how much you squash it. If you are talking about the amethyst crystals being beautiful, they are years old, but from the Rock Shed, and they went into the vibe starting at 200 grit on up. They are still selling them. And, I've got to add, they make great refrigerator magnets, the larger ones anyway.

The pendant started out as sort of a fleur-de-lis design, but it wouldn't, just wouldn't stay without considerable tightness around the top. The odd thing was that I wanted a gap at the bottom (the kind we are constantly trying to get rid of) but it refused to *not* go into the bottom fairly evenly. I think my main problem with it is that I was trying to get in touch with my frou frou side (I do this about once every three years) and it kept eluding me!

Thank you, Khara, I learned quite a bit, the biggest lesson being "don't use 26-gauge wire for binding wire." The second lesson was given a slippery surface, round wire can slide and twist even worse than square.

I LOVE them, Susan! The stones are gorgeous and the wraps are PERFECT for them. You learned a hard lesson with that 26g. I agree with Patty- the back is just as nice and really could be double sided. I can't see a damn thing wrong with the earrings. They are natural stones, after all.

I can’t remember what gauge wire is usually used for binding.

I can’t remember what gauge wire is usually used for binding. Khara, it usually depends on the size of the main wires, and I generally use a half-round that is one gauge larger than the binding wires, although this is not "carved in stone" for me. 26-gauge half round would likely have fallen apart--I was using 26-gauge round wire, and it just didn't hold its shape. I was thinking that half-round might not work well binding two different types of wires together, but it probably would have worked better than what I used. I hope this helps!

I was trying to participate in this challenge but it didn't work out. I guess it accomplished what it was supposed to. I stepped outside the box and I accomplished a halfway decent leave after 3 attempts. I didn't know how I was going to do the bail on the top and I can completely messed it up when I tried to do it and the whole thing's coming apart now. No way to save it at this point. It wasn't ever going to be anything anybody would wear anyway!

Beautiful iridescent ammonite.! That was sooooo good! I know they can get frustrating, but you should have kept it for the lessons you learned. I think it was awesome!
