Are you captivated by the beauty of polished stones and the art of cabochon making? Whether you're an experienced lapidary artist or just starting your journey, the Rock Tumbling Hobby Forum community warmly invites YOU to become a part of something truly special. The RTH Benefit Cab Contest in honor of long time forum community member Ed Mohs is open for entries but only for a limited time. Ed left an indelible mark on the forum and all of his friends here, and we are working to preserve his memory with the purchase of a permanent bench and name plaque at the Phoenix zoo. By joining this contest, you have the opportunity to showcase your incredible talent and skill, while also contributing to a meaningful cause. Every cabochon you create is a brushstroke on the canvas of history, a testament to the enduring spirit of lapidary artistry. Don't miss your chance to make a difference and be a part of this remarkable tribute. Join the contest today, and let your creativity shine in honor of a true friend of the forum community. Click here for details and together, let's honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape the future. Join us in this artistic journey, and let your cabochon making skills be a part of something greater than yourself.

Tommy has always wanted to run a grande contest like this. He's talked about for years. With the need to raise money for Ed, it made sense to do it now.
I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the numbers of people signing up. I mean, thank you, of course, to all who have- but seriously what's the hold up? No, I get it, I really do. I was on the fence, too. I just haven't been cabbing much lately. But, we do need more people to join up so.....
I am going to offer a silver wrap (of their choice of their stone) to the 1st place winner. Send me the stone- I'll wrap it and send it back. I'm challenging everyone else to throw in for the prize- first or second - or both. What do you have to offer to sweeten the pot?

I'm done with cab contests. I don't do the regular cab contest anymore either - but this one is VERY different.
AND it's for a good cause - mohs was a nice guy and made me smile with his posts, and I miss him on here.
So I thought I'd crawl out from under my rock and enter How about the rest of your guys - there's 6 or 7 more entries needed here.

I'm done with cab contests. What?? say it ain't so and please elaborate on that. Which contest was it that caused such disillusionment? I really admire your talents and consistent work flow and I've been fighting off the urge to twist your arm and see if I could get you to jump into the monthly contest

My wife got a degree in studio art and was a very good painter. She had no interest in selling her work. I did some investigation and understood. I also understood the term 'starving artist'. Being successful as an artist, means getting gallery space and that is extremely competitive. There is no public vote. After completing cabs, I take pictures, originally to document my work and now for Etsy listing pictures. I post the pictures here. People can look or not look, comment or not comment. This is a hobby for me and I am interested in being pleased with my work.

stardiamond to each their own, but any creative effort can be called art, and input from others, even in a peoples choice type competition, should be valued. It may not be right in your mind for you to compete but I can't agree with a blanket statement that it's wrong for others as well. I may be reading something into your statement that you didn't say, apologies if I did. In the days before digital photos and cameras I had a T-shirt that said something like "good art won't match your sofa", yet so many people are going to buy it to fit their decor, frustrating but true. Elizabeth has painted as well, but not for years, and she never thought of it as an income either.

In today's world of social media everything gets voted on. I get stats on Etsy. Views are related to sales. Likes are clicks. People don't vote on who gets gallery space. People can do whatever they like as long as it doesn't harm.

Getting back on a positive note we've got 10 very good cabochon makers on board and this stands to make RTH history as the most exciting and tightly contested event we've ever had. It's not too late to jump in! We're looking for more and I've got at least six more beautiful slabs ready to ship as soon as you take the challenge. The official contest thread has been updated so check it out!

I'm really excited to see this unfold. Should be fun! Me too! The best part is even if we roll with the 10 entries we have, minus the slabs shipping cost ($8.10 each thru PP ship station) - and keeping the prizes the same as posted - we've already raised almost $600 for Ed's bench I'm super proud of that and still hoping it climbs higher to hit the $1000 goal.

There's been art competitions since the 1400's and maybe earlier. Virtually all the renaissance artist and impressionist competed in competition.

Virtually all the renaissance artist and impressionist competed in competition. One of the greatest art competition was the Paris Salon. It was juried and not a vote by the visitors to the exhibition. Did the public vote in the earlier competitions you mentioned? It seems I am quite good at pissing people off.

I gave my personal preference and later clarified that it was only my personal preference. It should have ended there. I didn't need for someone to say that I was wrong. I shouldn't have to debate about what I believe.

Then don't debate about it. Your choice.

Youtube has a Thumbs up or down for everything. There used to be a lot of thumbs down votes. I remember a movie that I especially liked got a lot of negative votes. I wrote in the comments: "I'm glad I don't know anyone who didn't like this movie." Strangely I haven't seen a single negative vote there since. It is all about ATTITUDE!

It seems I am quite good at pissing people off. I don't think anyone is pissed off - I know that I'm not. As has been said you and everyone else is welcome to an opinion and what better place to voice it than a public forum? For me it is a little awkward to have a negative turn in a thread where I'm trying to be head cheerleader for a great cause, and opinions about cab contests aside, it IS a great cause honoring Ed. Hope we can agree on that point
