My great grandfather, on my moms side, lived down in the Valley, along the Rio Grand River in south Texas. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s, he and my great grandma traveled all over Texas and Louisiana by car, often camping and exploring. During these trips my Pappy collected larger sized rocks that caught his eye. I spent much time with my Pappy down on the farm when I was growing up. I was under 5 and he was in his 90s. Half his fingers were missing from working the cotton gins and he was deaf as a doornail, but he could still play a mean fiddle and play with his great grandson (me) for hours at a time. These rocks are now being handed down to me by my mom. As I find and dig them out from around their yard, I’ll be posting the interesting ones. Here’s the first. It caught my eye while I was watering some plants and got it wet, so I cleaned it up with some Limeaway and a bit of scrubbing. Wow! It’s a big ole chunk of chalcedony and I think I see some interesting features inside. It’s in a safe place now. I sure did love my Pappy and having these brings back memories that I can’t believe are still in me. I’m not sure what I’ll do with all these yet, there’s several dozen at least ranging from 5-15lbs. Some I’ll preserve as they are, others I’ll slab someday when I get a saw, maybe break a couple up to tumble…then send pieces or slabs to my brothers and family so they also have a bit of Pappy around to remember. All I know is there are some really unique rocks out there and I’m excited, as well as honored, to slowly collect them. I’ll make sure the legend of Pappy lives on in our family for many years.

What a nice way to remember such a special person in your life. Rocks are forever, too, so they can keep on getting passed down.

That's a wonderful story! I love that the rocks brought back such fond memories for you. Please post more of them as you find them. I'd really like to see what Pappy collected.

Thanks y’all! I took a walk around the yard and wow, Pappy had a good eye for rocks. Large petrified wood, agate looking rocks with banding, a huge brecciated agate of sorts…I have my work ahead of me. Looks like as many as 40 rocks, averaging 10lbs each. Some I’ll have to dig up they’ve been sitting for so many years.

I was staring at it, wondering if that is just iron oxide staining, so I chipped a chunk off the top and the color is not just on the surface. Next time I pull out the saw I’m going to take a 2” piece off the end and see how it looks. I’ve been thinking it is a Jasper of sorts, but it didn’t conchoidal fracture like I’m used to Jasper and chert doing. It’s a hard rock for sure. Not overly heavy or magnetic.

I already know what I’m grabbing next. A rather large rock caught my eye and when I turned it around, noticed part one end of it had been broken off. So I brushed off the dirt and realized it’s a big brecciated chalcedony. I’ll be checking it out more here soon. Maybe even take a hammer to it since the end is already broken off.

jasoninsd Hey Jason, doesn’t this one look like a prairie agate before it was river tumbled for a million years? I’m going to tumble this one whole in the rebel 17, I think. Someday. It’s really cool though. I’m glad Pappy found and kept it. In the 4th picture I sprayed it down some. If you hadn't said it was one of your Pappy's rocks, I would have bet ANY amount of money that was a Prairie Agate I sent you!! Spittin' image I tell ya!!
