I read a lot about psilomelane over the weekend, including it that occurs around Wiley's Well. It's not a mineral, or a rock, or truly the name of a formal mineral group. It's classification is kind of a mess and apparently mineralogists have been trying to hash it out for over 100 years. Its Mohs is only 5.0 to 6.0, so that plus it being brittle explains how difficult it is to tumble. Most of the cabs seen in necklaces and so forth are obviously hand-shaped and polished, which I don't want to get into. In the list of materials that I track and make notes about, I'm moving it from the main list to a sublist I call "Too soft to tumble well".
That it's relatively heavy, and kind of soft, and brittle, sort of creates a unique combination. I think I'm going to switch to trying to tumble it with lots of cushioning as is my method with amethyst and aventurine and feldspar and some other touchy things. The difficulty I'm encountering with the few pieces done is probably not going to go away. Maybe 1/10th are making it through, and not very big, but are beautiful. My goal I think is to move on from this material after maybe finding a lemon-size piece that I can successfully tumble and polish someday. Each time that I get pretty good at this or that material, I try to also conquer one sizeable piece lemon-size or larger or me to keep and display for my own enjoyment. Accomplishing this is often a lot of work.
So I'm no longer so obsessed with trying to chase down psilomelane in the field anymore, but if that one seller has this $100 large piece again in Quartzite I might try to buy it.

Does anyone know what the date is for this glorious gathering? The last one was the Friday when the PowWow show was going on. Would that make it January 19th 2024 for this next one?
We are planning on going again and looking at booking hotels a bit earlier this time, I think we booked them like a week before the show last time lol. We are looking forward to seeing y'all again and some new faces!!

The last few years after Tony's main bbq got very popular and large with several groups participating we started doing a seperate smaller RTH get together on Friday night. I do not know what plan Tony is cooking up for 2024. catmandewe

IF there is no Major Life Event between now & January 10th, I'M aiming to head out to Phoenix/Quartzite around the 16th. Would be great to meet up with some RTH people and see Ed's bench.

It's looking like I'm going to be able to do it this year too. Loose plans right now to head out about the 18th. Spend a couple of days at Quartzite and a couple of days hounding in the desert. I want to go to Burro Creek but have a lot of research to do for all of the hounding.

My boyfriend and I are selling again this year at Powwow. We'll be in the same spot as last year. I forget the booth number but will post it later.

DO NOT STAY at the Quartzite Yacht Club!!
We stayed there because it is on the main drag, and next to a decent diner. And I liked the funny name.
It is ancient motor homes divided into two. Noisy and full of fleas!!

Noisy and full of fleas!! Yeah. In January I went there for supper and it took so long for the waitress to get off of her ass and come talk to me that I left. In other words, I sat there for 45 minutes with my thumb up my ass waiting and she never came. She walked by me and saw me but never came to the table. Piss poor service. Now, the Main Street Laundromat & Showers was top notch.

I'm planning to have the van cleared back out after the Flagg show and ready to sleep in, so this year we can at least do 2 days without driving 2 hours each way. Thinking about where the closest relatively safe place to park and sleep might be. rockbrain Mark K I plan to hit Burro Creek again this year too, maybe we can meet. I have a line on a couple spots out there as well as the MP 11-13 stretch of BC cutoff(?) road that has the marginal but occasionally real nice pastellite. Also date creek for crystals is between BC and Wickenburg.
