I love tumbling just for that reason! I never would have thought about tumbling those rocks… But look at them! They’re really pretty! I think your grandkids will love them, and I bet they will be finding a lot more treasures for you! I think those were from a bag of drainage rock I bought from Home Depot to use around my home. While they did not polish as well as the typical tumbling rough, they did turn out better then I thought they would.

My wife and I play a large role in the care of three of our grandchildren (ages 6, 5, and 10 months). The two older grandkids know of my interest in rock tumbling, and recently they gifted me with some rocks they had found: That may be the best gift I have ever received I emptied a 3 lb barrel this morning in order to start tumbling my gift. Hopefully I can get a better than expected shine Aren't grandkids the greatest?? I raised 2 of mine. They are very special to me. Not that my kids aren't- there's just something about grandkids. It was so cool of them to bring you rocks. I don't have any biological children, and our youngest daughter was nine when my wife and I started dating. So these three are the only children I have had the opportunity to experience from birth. I feel so lucky to have them in my life. And exhausted! It is hard to match their energy level

I always have a special place for quartz but it feels like I can never tumble it well. You seemed to have figured it out.
Jason nailed the best one, but what is the blue variety?

Nice shine on those Adam!! I really like the looks of this one in particular: Thanks Jason That one is my favorite also. It is the only rock I have found with golden inclusions. I didn't know they were there until I tumbled it in 220 SiC.

Thanks! I used my phone at 3x magnification to take the pictures. Is it an Iphone 15? I just got one and noticed it had a magnify app last night. Haven't tried it on rocks yet but I was impressed by the magnification of my fingers. I think it's using AI or some digital processing but it still looks great. It is a Galaxy S23.

Here is a rock that I found in Garner, NC back in October: The side facing the camera was where I broke off a corner. I figure that the main rock and the piece I broke off weighed around 21 ounces combined. It was on top of the ground, and I don't know its composition, but it seemed solid and microcrystalline. So I thought it might tumble well. The small piece shaped up quickly and was polished back in January. I worked on the main piece off and on since December. Once I got it shaped and defect-free, I put it in my UV minibowl to polish. That turned out to be a mistake. It was slightly too big to move around properly and ended up being roughed up on one side. So, I put it in a 3 lb barrel and tumbled it and ceramic with 220 SiC, 600 SiC, and 1000 SiC one week at a time in succession. Then, last Sunday I tumbled it with more well-worn ceramic and Rock Shed AO polish. Here is how it turned out (pulled it out today): For my first time polishing something in a rotary tumbler I am qite pleased with the result. The combined weight after polishing is about 10.25 ounces:

Very cool. Looks like well marbled red meat. Tumbling a 5 pounder - respect!

Wondered where you had been. Looks like some good rocks to tumble. The sodalite I won is in the tumbler now and looks like it will be really great when finished.
