Recently I've been inspired by others projects and ideas in combination with my inability to come up with a solution to my lack of vibe tumbling, I've decided to focus on this project for a while.
I think I'm going to do is create a small post for each rock and then update and link back to them, so if anyone wants to see the progress, you can just jump right to it instead of jumping between posts and pictures.
I won't be taking pictures every single week or doing updates unless there is significant or noteworthy change like new colors, banding, damage, etc. There is no need to weight these every week, but I will get a tally at the end for total mass lost. There are near 30 samples I think, but I really do want to record them all as some kind of experiment, not sure what scientific or other significant value it holds, but I'll probably learn something along the way. If anyone has suggestions for other things to track or methods, I'm open to suggestions. I'm just going to call them by their initial weight, but if anyone would like to name them, I'm down.
I'll try and capture photos from the same angle, though from past experience, a better side will show or it becomes impossible due to the way the rock breaks and shapes.
(Fair warning that I'll be using a flat lap to take off some the deeper pits, you'll see in some pictures what I mean)
On with the rocks...more to come soon

Weight - 24.3g Sure it might look promising, I think at quick count there were near 20 layers visible, but this is the smallest rock in the bunch by quite a bit. There is potential here, but that top looks like it has plantar warts and the rest of the edges sit pretty far off the core. I don't think there is enough meat here to become anything substantial. If that quartz window can just make it a little while... Prediction - Thumb sized beauty or glorified rock scrap Rough

Weight - 28.9g I expect next to nothing from this little dude. That top section has the slightest chance of molding into a longer edge, but more likely breaks off in the first two weeks. Maybe some deep colors develop on the back side, but I think those layers will flake off as well.
Prediction - Shiny nickel with and edge of banding if I'm lucky Status - Rough

Weight - 31.8g
So part of the reason I have near 30 rocks was that I found all these Bahias at a reasonable 3.50/lb. By the time I had gone thru the bin the first time and got a total and decided to go back and pick out a half dozen more. I have to believe this was one of them. I've done a couple with the candy stripes and they aren't my favorite but it showed a nice clean edge and some banding so what the heck, why not. After closer inspection, there some nice orbs on top that might turn out.
Prediction - Solid piece, but nothing crazy. I won't be surprised if that crack on the edge goes much deeper. Status - Rough

Weight - 33.8g This one has potential depending on how clean I can keep the druzy and what colors show up. There is a pretty nice range already, so fingers crossed there is more under the skin. I'll probably have to work an edge to keep everything even. Prediction - I think this one should turn out nicely and be one of the best small rocks in this batch. Status - Rough 3/10/2024 - 26.0g

Weight - 36.1g Easily the best shaped of the bunch. It's pretty strange how much more round this one is compared to others. Even being this small and round, I wager it'll still take 5-6 weeks in coarse. Some buried cracks on the bottom side.
Prediction - Shiny marble. I'm not all that intrigued by this one tbh Status - Rough 4/27/24 - 23.8g

Weight - 37.4g A face only a mother would love. It's too bad that back end has some cracks, I'm hoping they break off so it'll take shape sooner. Nice tight banding might lead to more surprises as the weeks go by. Dunno why, but I think of this girls face when I look at it lol Prediction - Has potential, but something tells me the colors are pretty close to the final product. Status - 1 week in coarse

Weight - 38.2g
A pretty unremarkable rock, I'm hoping there is some suprises that show up when the crust starts to wear away. Some deep pits too, I dunno this one needs some luck to catch up.
Prediction - I feel like there is going to be some kind of weird pattern down there with muted colors....on with the experiment!
Status - 1 week in coarse

Weight - 39.7g I don't think this truly considered a Bahia. The texture and colors are there, but that's where the similaraties end. Pretty unremarkable, not sure why I picked this one up lol
Prediction - Painfully obvious it's just standard rock after 2-3 weeks and I'll probably quit giving it much attention. Pits, cracks, likely just filler for the rest. 12/28/23 - This fell apart of one week and clearly isn't worth tracking anymore.

Weight - 42.6g Finally getting to something about golf ball size and another good looking rock. This one has some of the strongest orb patterns of the bunch and some nice layering just below. I think best case scenario it turns into a beautiful finished stone and I'm a little hesitant to tumble it. It's a pretty nice specimen on it's own and a good example of what a Bahia can look like.
Prediction - With a little time, patience, and likely some time cleaning up the rough spots, I have high hopes for this guy. That big crack on the top is something to keep and eye on and need to keep that druzy protected somehow... Status - Rough 12/28/23

Weight - 44g This thing was born to be a star (as far as rocks go). The shape and pattern reminded me of an insect wing. Nice clean banding and shape, hardly any exterior flaws to work around. Kind of hope the colors pop a little more, but it's pretty showy already. Prediction - Probably the easiest rock to predict a solid outcome one. Wish they were all this easy to pickup and tumble. Might lose some of those finer layers on top. Status - Rough 3/10/2024 - 35.3g

Weight - 44.6g I feel like this one is a little underrated and might have some serious upside. It might depend on how clean that big quartz face stay unblemished and how quickly that corner breaks off. Sure there is a little work to do on the big pit, but it should be worth it. Prediction - Underrated, I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I guess I'm invested in this one now. Status - Rough 5/12/2024 - 24.7g

Weight - 46.3g So my last batch that had very similar layering and texture and I'm still tumbling that one. It's almost like the layers are too thin and tight and every week just digs deeper and deeper. That being said, the other one like this is turning out really nicely and that banding is starting to hold on. Maybe it's that the angle of the rock isn't as severe, more flattened or smoothed edges. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about tbh.
Prediction - Will probably lose 1/2 it's mass and shape will change considerably. Lots of work to be done, but after a couple weeks and some grinding, hoping to commit this one to the front of the pack. Status - Rough 12/20/2023

Weight - 47.4g In similar fashion to the one before, there is some serious work to be done on this one. Those tight layers need weeks to start and even out, likely months. It's really hard to know which way this one will go. Prediction - Honestly, as cool as it looks right now, I feel like this one might be a dud. It seems like the layering is all the same, but maybe there is something buried underneath. Status - Rough 12/20/2023

Weight - 47.7g This one is kind of interesting, part of me doesn't like it at all. Probably muted colors and kind of an ugly rock to work with, plenty of material will be lost. Those odd swirls on the end may offer a surprise, however. Prediction - If a Bahia had an average, I feel like this is it. Alright to begin with and likely alright as a finished product. Will I even enjoy this rock?? Funny how you feel about something might affect your feelings towards it later... Status - Rough - 12/20/2023

Weight - 53.1g Far and away, the most interesting rock of the bunch. I don't even know what the is going on here. There are some botryoidals going on in a few places, which I've never seen on a Bahia. There is tight banding and warped patterns. If a rock could be a child prodigy, this it. Plus the 3 pictures I took look like a CAR, E.T's HEAD, and BATMAN SIGNAL. This thing is screaming for attention. Let's hope it can deliver. Prediction - A rock that transcends space and time. This thing is probably going to end up in fairy tales and end marriages. It's going to lose some mass, but man, I think it'll be worth the pain.

Weight - 55.4g Another I'll be keeping a close eye on. I didn't see the tight banding until I started taking pictures of it. If previous batches are an indicator, some of that black might bleed thru.
Prediction - Quite possibly the biggest sleeper of the group. Don't want to get too far ahead of myself on this one Status - Rough 1 Week - New Angle
