Hey folks, I don't really hang out here too much, but recently I have gotten a little more into Rock Tumbling. When I make marbles (from stone), I have been saving up all sorts of interesting quartz material and have been using my dads old Loretone 33B.
Now, across from where I work there is an antique shop which has a Thumlers Tumbler Model B (1500 RPM motor) that is missing the barrel. This particular unit does not have the notches in the body like other model B's, so you can't move the rollers. Price is $25.00 and is untested.
I have been thinking about it and was wondering if anyone has seen some economical drums for this model, or has a good reason for me to either get it, or forget about it.

The Chicago Electric barrels or the like should be fine I do have a “Rolling Star” sears tumbler that needs a barrel, so I’ll keep the Chicago electric one in mind. The tumbler I posted about uses a 15lb big ole barrel unfortunately.

If the motor is good and strong on that Thumler's Model B, it's an absolutely great bargain at $25. I would snap it up in a heartbeat just to have a spare motor for my tumblers.

The Thumlers AR 12 barrel will work, or pony up for the B model barrel. Either way it's a great deal. If the motor works it's also a highly sought after item because it's the same motor as the UV 10 uses and has become hard to find.

Thanks everyone! I will have to make it over there at some point and see if it has any life left in it. The price of the ar12 drum is a little better but still I'm not too sold on the idea. I might see what I can make and go from there.

I am pretty certain that the Rebel 17 barrel is the same size as the Model B barrel. The typical price I see it sale for is $100.

I am pretty certain that the Rebel 17 barrel is the same size as the Model B barrel. The typical price I see it sale for is $100. That’s very good to know. That’s a good bit cheaper than I see other barrels for sure. I’m not sure if I’m at the point where I’d want to spend that much yet. I’m very new to the hobby for the most part. Around 15 years ago or so my dad bought all sorts of rock tumbling stuff from tumblers to buckets of grit, then never used any of it besides maybe some stage 1 tumbling. Talking to him, he’s not too interested in it. So talking myself through all this, I am in the mindset that for $100 I could have a pretty big tumbler and won’t have to worry about needing grit or anything for a very long time.

So I finally made it back to the antique shop where this tumbler still is.
The motor was stiff and we plugged it up. Seems the motor is dead. The owner said I could have it at a discount and my honest answer was “well, it would have to be dirt cheap”.
At $18.00 I passed on it.
I read in a thread about how these can take a particular HVAC motor and did do some looking, but was unable to find the motor for sale. The original motors seem to be expensive and problematic.
Figured I’d give an update on it. As it sits, all it is is a base with rollers.

I replaced my Thumblers Model B motor with a slightly faster one, that I got on E-Bay, for $55. So there are options out there. The Model B takes a standard 3.3 mount motor, so it's not hard to find one that fits without too much work.
I can't remember if my husband had to shim the shaft to fit the original pulley ?
So if you don't want to fool with that, just make sure you look at the exact shaft size of a replacement motor.
