Wow, tough competition this month! Great work so far folks! I cut 2. The first was a Welo opal pear shape that measured 13 x 7.5 mm. I like it but it was a devil to photograph. I was going to go with it until I accidentally ran across a tiny cross-section of a rhodochrosite stalactite containing a perfect little bulls-eye pattern. I had to try! So here's my best effort. The Rough: Width: Length: Front: Side: Maybe I should have entered the opal, but it's too late now. Here's how it measured: Width: Length: Side View:

What was I thinking making this month my first entry in the cab contest? These are ones I won't be entering, unless I change my mind tonight. The first one I tried was a horn coral that I found when I was with Rob of Michigan Rocks in April. It was ok but not great and I would have had to go back and cut it down as it was a little above the 10 mm limit. I got some ocean jasper from Dillon dillonf (thanks Dillon). One had some nice starburst patterns and I thought I could slab it so those would show up. No such luck. Here are the two I did. One has a starburst pattern but it was on the side and not the top. How did that happen? Next I reached into my bag of tiny Lake Superior Agates that I collected directly from basalt 45 years ago with hammer and chisel. Here are the two I came up with. Colors just don't come through well. I need a better camera. The first has a vivid green fortification inside the pink fortifications. The pink was much larger when I started. The second one actualy has some blue material in it but again it just doesn't come through with my phone camera. Anyway, will post my entry tomorrow if I can get my camera and lights to work well. Chris

Lots of great tiny cabs here. Sadly, I am not going to make this contest after all. I have been spending time cutting and face polishing and just haven't spent any time on the cab machine. I'll jump into the next contest for sure.

Ok, here is my official entry. Official three photos follow. Petoskey stone from Petoskey or Charlevoix, Michigan area. A few other miscellaneous photos to follow. Had a hard time getting good light for the photos. Tried outside but it didn't seem to help. Thought I had this below 10 mm yesterday but when I measured it this morning it was over 11. Yikes! Got it back to right on 10 mm on the width. The original stone was mostly flat. I think what I ended up with was the "eye" on the left side in the middle of that side in the before photo. I stuck it on a dop (tried to position the dop on the back at the location of the eye I wanted to focus on) and ground it down to size. I didn't outline a shape because of the roughness. I just eyeballed it. Once to size I removed it from the dop and ground down the back. Because it was too big this morning, I resized it using my fingers rather than putting it back on a dop. I think I only dropped it a couple times. Good thing I have rubber matts in my cabber just in case that happens. Measurement photos follow: Here is a photo of the original stone (bottom one) with a penny for scale. Thanks for looking, Chris

I still don't have an entry, but I sifted through all my small agates to see if there is any good candidate for a quick and neat polish. I eventually gave up the idea, because from my prior experience once they get polished, they will look quite "straightforward" not necessarily enhancing the look.

These are Gobi Agates. I tumble polished a few pieces to see how they will turn out: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1320470/thread

With that the small cabs contest is closed for new entries! Thanks everyone for such a great turnout Nine entries for such a technical contest exceeds my fat-fingered expectations. I have to run out the door for a very long day of work so official photos collected and thread hidden will be done Sunday morning. This gives everyone who entered and those who posted a potential-entry place holder photo another 24 hours to play with your photos if needed. Once again we appreciate Chad from Suva Lapidary who provided the $30 gift certificate.
