I do likewise. I'm actually more concerned about the 2 legged predators but you never know what you will encounter.

One on one, I could likely come out on top with my training. With a person w/o a gun. With a large carnivore, those odds go down quickly. I still rarely carry while out west.

We are dealing with two legged problems in the mountains over this way.

Does the risk of attack put you off rockhounding or make it more fun because of the adrenaline rush?

Does the risk of attack put you off rockhounding or make it more fun because of the adrenaline rush? I think the equivalent to us finding a mountain lion would be like if you found a brown snake a little too close for your comfort. You learn to keep your eyes open. I think only a nut would find the prospect of an attack by either a human or critter appealing.

I think only a nut would find the prospect of an attack by either a human or critter appealing. When you write it that way I see your point. I suppose I was thinking more from an adrenaline-junkie perspective where the higher risk from doing something adds to how rewarding it is, but some people do like to deliberately seek out danger
Seeing a snake is a bit of a rush.
In defense of snakes though, they don't really target people like a bear/cougar/serial killer would. They just want to chill.

titaniumkid the diamondbacks and sidewinders in the Phoenix valley are so chill they rattle after they bite you, but they don't generally bite unless you don't notice them and are close to stepping on them. Green Mojaves in the upper elevations are another story, insanely territorial and WILL advance on you.

Does the risk of attack put you off rockhounding or make it more fun because of the adrenaline rush? Yeah. I definitely dont get off on the idea of having that type of encounter then having a reason to shoot it 😂. I’ve seen plenty of cougars out in the wild. They do their thing, I do mine. But in the off chance… I ain’t playing the get outta here ya silly kitty game. It’s rare it happens. But as you can see from the article.. it does happen.

Does the risk of attack put you off rockhounding or make it more fun because of the adrenaline rush? Most definitely neither for me. A gun is the one tool I carry that I hope I never have to use. Haven't seen a snake in the wild for a while. Last time I saw a rattlesnake I took it home with me. I'm a bit wiser now!

I took a green home one time. Had it for years. It was well trained. It would go to the back of the tank when I undid the ratchet strap holding the lid on and wait. You could tell it was excited. Had to get rid of it when my niece moved in. She had a listening problem. It died of old age at the reptile zoo.

You just have to take the right kind of dog! LOL My wiener dog regularly kicks the pit's ass that lives next door. The brown one on the right.

She really didn't want him there and she escorted him all the way off her property. Such a beautiful animal.

She really didn't want him there and she escorted him all the way off her property. Such a beautiful animal. To be fair, I believe he came up on her cubs. This is a common response with a lot of wild game. People have been killed by bear, moose, elk, deer, etc.. just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ve come across fawns and didn’t see the mom in site. But wasn’t going to stick around long enough to find out where she was. When I go hounding, I go so far off the beaten path generally, that and encounter like that could be the end of me, no one would find me 😂. I just put in 10+ miles on foot yesterday out in no man’s land. Hasn’t been a soul in those parts since the natives
