I wish I was that analytic about it. Husband was drooling over 3 - both the material and the presentation. He kept pointing out all the reasons why it was awesome. I just picked out the one I thought was super pretty. I wonder if others here vote for it based on difficulty, etc. That's an interesting way to choose! I don't know if this will come across right or not and I don't want it to degrade ANY of the entries. As I said it was a crowded field of really nice stones but what made Mike's stone stand out is the scene capture that he achieved. It wasn't just "here's a beautiful cab that contains a beautiful dendrite" - it was more like *bam* here's a picture-jasper-like stone and I'm seeing a desert scene and the dendrite was a cactus... OK I'll go take my meds now lol.

At the end of the day, its ultimately up to the voters as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And yes, it was a great capture. Wont deny that one bit.

Congratulations miket ! Your cab is fantastic and a clear winner in a crowded field of winners. Honestly when I saw your entry my first thought was to change the name of the contest back to Killer Cab Contest Thank you sir!

I wanted to be more analytical about it, but realized that just reading about the materials and process wasn’t enough. I simply lack the experience to appreciate the material rarity or difficulty making the specific cab from it… so my voting criteria became “which would I purchase for a client that only specified dendritic”.
I am still wowed by all entries, though! Haven’t started trying yet but am well aware that it will be a very long time til I can make anything close to those!

Probably still the one I would buy for myself, though! Now I’m starting to wonder if rocks are like clouds, and I am the boring one that can’t see the dog….

That's funny and I can relate. I don't usually see what others see. Yes, they are like clouds in that everyone sees their own image.
opalpyrexia Gary usually sees the most detailed and awesome images.

I *did* manage to see a scene in #7, made me think palms in a hurricane. Or drinking too much Malibu rum? 🤣
Oooh that should be it’s name! “Trashed on Malibu Rum”. Yep yep.

Very nice miket ! Will this one end up getting wrapped? Thanks! Yes, I'm going to wrap this one...eventually! 🙂 I've actually started separating cabs into 2 piles- one pile for wrapping and another for just gluing on bails. Thanks again Khara!

I love where this conversation headed. I too felt like a knucklehead for not spotting that cactus. Then I went down a shame spiral feeling like they shouldn't have let no-cabber vote. Because I still picked mine like a crow looking for something shiny. oooh! shiny! Tommy - thanks for coming in and explaining it. We went back through every contest thread on this site and tried picking the winner with theme parameters in mind and without looking at the results first. It turned into a fun game... and at times we were freaking out by how awesome the entries were. The kids were probably cringing hard when they heard us from our room yelling, "Oh my god!" realrockhound - That cab is even better backlit! amazing! miket - I hope my ramblings didn't take away from your big win. I think its excellent and you made a very cool art piece Sorry if it came off as if you didn't deserve your victory, that was the opposite of my intention. I only wondered aloud if I should give my own voting process more thought next time.

Congratulations, Mike miket !! The moment I saw your slab I realized that you had a superior contender. And your finished cab is excellent! I see a Joshua Tree against a rocky desert background. That's funny and I can relate. I don't usually see what others see. Yes, they are like clouds in that everyone sees their own image. opalpyrexia Gary usually sees the most detailed and awesome images.

I just found some dendrites that I didn’t know I had. Day, dollar, late, short, for the contest anyway. For some reason it’s one category I just haven’t collected much of. Anyway it’s a pretty neat piece. Anyone know what it is? realrockhound ?
