Got to chatting with a few members about dogs today. Through a very lazy search, didn't see a pet thread. So I made this thread to share your animals. Here are my two dogs. Here's our new(ish) addition to the family. I always spell it Blue...but my wife always corrects me that it's actually spelled Blu! He joined our family last August. He was a "used" dog we picked up at the shelter. We're certain he's Pitbull...and we're pretty sure he's mixed with Rottweiler. Either way he's a knucklehead! LOL He's about 65 pounds of energy! I've never had a dog who WANTED love! He'll come up just to get a hug. It's really awesome!      I love that side profile pic. |

I have seen her be very empathetic to injured animals as well such as a pigeon that was shot through the eye. She was so gentle with it knowing it was injured she went up to it carefully and was checking on it. Have pics of that somewhere. |

You can tell Randy is sharp, he has keen eyes. jasoninsd - Blu looks like a tough sweetheart. A gentle giant! He's got a strong looking body and expression of an old soul! I love him too! Where's that bodybuilder picture? vegasjames - What kind of dog is Jax? She's all camouflaged! What a cool looking dog! She's awesome! I love her sleeping picture. That one's priceless! Thanks for starting this thread! I love ALL of the photos. Jax is a blue heeler (Australian cattle dog, Queensland heeler). She is a small one though. Don't know if she was a runt or a mini. Females are smaller than the males anyway, but she is still about half the size of most female heelers.

Heelers are bred from dingoes. The spots come from the dalmatian in them, and the black fuzzy ears with an interior comes from the Australian kelpie that is another Australian cattle dog. The final dog the heelers are bred with is the highland collie.
The dingo in her gives her a quality of being a hunter and scavenger, so when we are out in the desert she loves to chase and eat lizards and has caught a gopher and a squirrel. And she eats whatever dead things she finds out in the desert. I have seen her eat mummified lizards, a mummified desert tortoise, an already half eaten rabbit, dead birds, the spinal cord from a dead horse, small animal skulls and other bones she finds out there, etc.
And she is very stubborn. If she is focused on something, she acts like she is deaf. And even if I tap her on the butt she acts like I am not even there.
Jax does want to be with me all the time though, and will not eat or even take treats from people like my mom if I leave until I get back.
She loves to snuggle when it is cool, or to sleep with her head on my feet so I cannot get up and leave without her knowing.
Jax also loves taking care of me. She will lick my wounds and try to bite my scabs off trying to help me heal.

If you're familiar with the cartoon Bluey, the main character is a blue heeler and her sister is a red heeler.
They are lovely dogs but because of the way they herd cattle (they bite at their heels) and they are working dogs, a lot of them end up in animal shelters here in Aus because their owners underestimate their care requirements.
I adored our family's red heeler, though he was aggressive to anyone who he thought threatened his family, and he also liked to herd cars. And flatten their tyres. And destroyed the lawn mower wheels. He saved my life in ways he will never know.

This is my little girl, Cloud. She's my best friend and daughter (and the "hair" to my fortune). Loves people, introverted around other dogs, independent, and like all snow breeds, she's bloody minded when something interests her. Her main hobby was guarding the fig tree from possums at all hours of the night, and in the end I had to pull all the unripe figs off so I could get some sleep.  |

We have the same problem here. People like the looks, but do not do their homework. They may nip at the heels of running children trying to herd them. They can be very protective of their family. For example, i as getting a massage one and when the lady started pounding on my back, Jax snapped at her thinking she was hurting me. They also protect their territory, and they can get in to mischief such as chewing furniture if bored. They are high energy and need a job, play or walked frequently.
I see a lot of heelers surrendered to the shelters on the heeler boards because of this.
I feel really sorry for the heelers because they bond so tightly with their owners due to their very high oxytocin levels, so they do not like being separated. Then they suddenly find themselves in "doggie prison" separated from their family with no understanding of what really happened. People really need to research heelers before getting one and need to be willing to put in the effort to keep them busy and train them properly if they are going to get one.

I'm a bit surprised they are so popular in the States. They are considered such a run of the mill dog here, but maybe Bluey's popularity is changing that. They don't make great family pets because they do like to bite when herding and they are so protective. I would never have trusted our heeler around little kids. They also attract people who want aggressive, protective dogs. Much like the pitbulls, staffies, etc who end up with bad reputations because they attract owners with egos that want muscle dogs. Shelters here are full of American staffies because of that and they are such sweet dogs.
