Because of the size and color I was googling around to see if the dendritic agate might be a Montana agate… and ran across the existence of “Madison blue”. Is that what the box of giant blue agates is?
edit: I now know about the existence of “white skin Brazilian agates”, so guess that’s what they are. Man there’s a lot I need to learn! Sure would be nice to have a few more labels…

This guy was in a box of Brazilian agates that had been repacked before being brought to me, and had a label that said “rainbow agate”. Is this also a Brazilian white skin rainbow?

Looks like it’s all agate scraps this time. Have already brainstormed some uses for scraps but the amount of offcuts I’m finding is crazy!

Thank you! I knew the first one, figured it out when I first found the rock. Wasn’t sure about the wonderstone since there are a lot of very similar rocks I’ve seen and not all get lumped in as “wonderstone”. Does anyone ever care about the source location, or is a generic wonder stone good enough?

It's fairly plentiful and is really admired for the patterns and colors.
I don't think it is always necessary to name the location unless it's really obvious that the stone comes from a specific spot- like a lot of agates named for the place they were found.

already WELL aware that it’s a rhyolite! May be a bit touchy about that issue lol. Have a lot of rhyolite on my property as well as some jaspers, so learning to tell if it’s just a harder reddish brown rhyolite or if it’s a brownish jasper was one of the first things I learned! Then I inherited a bunch of “jaspers”. Ugh!

Figured out why there are so many agate off cuts! I’ve found at least a dozen of these things (paperweights, I’m guessing). Sadly, some of my favorite heels match them so can abandon hope of finding the rest of it or whole slices….

I actually prefer jaspers to agates. To me they are more varied. And, if you take a porcelain jasper, as an example, it can be polished as well as an agate (for all practical purposes).

rockjunquie I loved agates as a kid, then fell in love with hematite and Mary Ellen jasper (local rocks). Now that I’ve started seeing rocks from all over the place i don’t think I have strong preferences! I quite like chalcedony in general and slightly prefer onyx or jasper over agates, but it’s all nice! Surprised at how much I love dendritic opal, too!

Found 3 mystery lumps that are too much work to bother cleaning at the bottom of the offcut bin. Anyone?

Cabby - I'm still trying to play catchup on the forum...and I gotta say, you acquired such an eclectic mix of materials in this collection! I can't tell for sure...but those last three look like a type of plume agate. Tagging realrockhound to see if he recognizes them...or if I'm totally off! LOL

jasoninsd thanks! I gotta admit, it’s definitely been a bit overwhelming since I was barely even starting my rockhounding interest when this started getting piled in my garage! It’s still FAR too soon for me to try to ID things, so mostly I’m just trying to see what I have to do basic sorting… and cramming my brain full of awareness of other types of rocks during my breaks! There’s no hope of ever figuring out what all of this is if I don’t know what options exist.

The lumpiness of the last three remind me of geodes/nodules from Indiana, or back East somewhere. like these on Ebay www.ebay.com/itm/126553440482
