It does look brighter (more saturated) to me under the sun. Either way it is a beauty.

I like that idea pebblesky - with 93 varieties, everyone might be able to contribute to it! If you’re having identification problems I feel bad for ya son, I got 93 problems but slab ID ain’t one.

rockjunquie - Great idea! I've found them in drawers, under the couch, under the bed... every time I find one he yells, "Hey! where you going with that??!!" I saw similar to #8 looking one on the Hans site which he called owyhee picture. Not that it isn't Owyhee gem, I'm not suggesting that, just saying that it has a similar color red. Does hans show owyhee gem in his books? I was proud of myself for knowing they weren't just called "Owyhee," until I heard there were 93 varities and I only knew 4. Now I feel like I need to put a lot more time into Owyhee jaspers. He has many pages in his books on Owyhee picture jasper. He doesn't call it "gem". I think that's been a pretty new thing to differentiate it from other owyhees. This just doesn't really look like it. It's much more red and doesn't have the buckskin color outlining it. I mean, it could be it, if so, it's really special.
Owyhee Gem aka Original Owyhee picture jasper was mined by Bruce Marcus originally, he found the deposit by high centering his VW bug on a rock pile while they were out in the Owyhee's chasing wild horses. After they got the bug off of the rock pile they found out that it had a bunch of pretty pictures in it with the blue sky, so they loaded some up in the trunk and took it to town. They sold the first load to Stewarts Gem shop in Boise and decided to put a claim on it. He then set up a shop with a bank of saws and then had 2 automated cabbing machines built for him in Germany which made calibrated cabs, each machine was capable of producing 500 cabs per day. He sold most of them to Tiffany's and the majority of the jewelry made from these cabs were sold in Europe. He told me that they hit a vein with the red in it and most people wanted the scenes with the blue in it and they had a hard time selling the red, so they started pushing most of the jasper with the red over the edge into the tailings pile. The red is now the most sought after of the Owyhee Gem. I saved the 2 automatic cabbing machines from the scrap yard and still have them at the yard. One of these days I hope to get them refurbished, but it will take more expertise than I have. Tony
