I found this bag with what I first thought was gravel or fish tank rock. Garnets - Thanks realrockhound! So I sprayed it down and saw some sparkles. I thought they looked like possible tourmaline? Does anyone know?

Thanks Pat, realrockhound, and chris1956. I had no idea! I know nothing about garnets. I have no clue what to do with these.... another future me problem.

Thanks Pat , realrockhound , and chris1956 . I had no idea! I know nothing about garnets. I have no clue what to do with these.... another future me problem. I used very small ones for eyes, noses, and buttons on my snowmen. But yours are a little too large for that I think. Still, a pretty color!

They can be faceted or cabbed normally faceted though
Can’t really tell if they have any purplish red or rose red tint to them if so they are rhodolite garnets they kinda look it Or they are almandite garnets they are red with a violet tint
Pyrope garnets are red with a brownish tint

Some of them had a hint of orange fire to them, kind of like a play of color like an opal does. Some of them are darker than others - all of them seem to be in the red to purple color. I didn't see any brown - but I didn't clean them or do anything, just picked out some cleaner ones to show the light in those photos.

So what color are they? I just looked to see what I have in the rough I have black, yellow and green garnets
I have rhodinite and almandite that are faceted but I think I am picking up your bad habits.
It’s to much like work to dig them out. I am not lazy it’s just that they are put away!

The red and purple are what you want for a garnet they sell better and are a little higher in price to
They won’t have any fire that’s a fracture your seeing be gentle when you move them around you can break a lot of them and make them useless for cutting purposes. A damaged one will become a cheap specimen if they can’t be cut.
Stones of the same family whether garnets, quartz or aquamarine dumped in a bag like you have when banged against each other will break or damage one another. Buckets or plastic totes will give a little more protection to them then that plastic bag

Looking at that last one looks like rhodonite it seems to have a purplish tint to it
The difference between the two is one will look like a pale amethyst and the other one will be more rose red

When some gems are in the rough they don’t always look the way they should
Sometimes getting them wet helps show the color
Other times looking at them dry and using a light as you did don’t put the stone right on the light hold the stone away from the end of the light
Your last picture was a good one it shows the color better

I was just looking at your pictures and if you look real close at picture number two above and just slightly to the right I can see two or three of them definitely have purple in them
Take a look and see if you can see them to
