Groovy Granite Thought I'd show my completed groove wrapped granite, from my last round of cabs. Mostly wanted to show it, as I really like the look the twisted wire gives it. I hadn't tried that on a groove wrap, or seen others, so I thought I'd show how the small variation adds something to the simple wrap.
Thanks for looking,
Patty

I like the twist and the granite! Do you think the twisted wire is more likely to come out of the groove than a square wire?

Thanks, Chris.
I don't think so at all, it seems very tight.
I used 20 gauge square - seems like as long as the groove is adequate, it should be fine. Give it a try.

I am thinking of sending my sister-in-law a set of tools and some wire as she wants to get into wrapping (so do I but haven't had the time). I think I have the tool set covered but what gauge wire(s) would you suggest for a beginner? Thanks, Chris

I like it with the twisted wire. Gives it a little more bling than a straight groove wrap. Well done as always.

Gauge can be subjective because different wrappers like to use different gauges. I prefer 22 square dead soft with 21 gauge half round half hard. I'm sure others will chime in with their recommendations.

Thanks, Chris There you go, Chris - I'd suggest copper wire = 20 gauge dead soft round wire (for border wires), and 21 gauge half hard, half round (for binding wires). That would get her started. Depending on the complexity of the wrap & the size of the stone, I use all kinds of wires.
But those 2 would get her started, on simple wraps.

It seemed fitting, as my sister self collected the granite & gifted it to me, on her yearly visit last month.
So I wanted to give a piece back, she could enjoy, without distracting from the stone, too much.
Thanks for looking, Patty

Oh, I forgot about the stone. It's nice also. btw, what did you use to cut the groove into the stone?

I think granite is underrated, some of it is really nice stuff, and really comes in lots of varieties.
As to the groove- it's really not a hard thing at all, once you get set up for it.
Basically, you need a " glass grinder" and the bit they sell with a narrow band of diamond.
You position the diamond height depending on the cab & then groove away.
These glass grinders are sold for stained-glass work, but are pretty useful, I've found for lots of rock stuff. And they come up used very frequently. I also use mine to clean up pre-form edges on cabs.

Very nice Patty! I have a Griffin just gathering dust- and not rock dust- in the garage, this makes me want to break it out again. I've only used it a handful of times, mostly because I need to practice with it more. 🙂 Love the twisted wire idea!

Thanks, Mike miket . Groove wraps could be a good way to get yourself back into wrapping as the weather gets cooler Somewhere (not easily found) there was a discussion about making a depth stop for groove cutting.
I haven't done enough of them, at this point, to have bothered.

Yes, that's the hardest part. Practice, practice, practice...
