Andy, the real kicker, rednecks in Oregon wear Iron Crosses, Jack Boots, and hate without knowing you. I ran into them there and just had to leave. My wife is from Oregon and she is afraid of them. They are not like southern rednecks.

Andy, did you know that when you hit one of the three things under your handle, they do things? Kinda neat.

In that town, rednecks tied an innocent black man to the bumper of a truck and drug him down the road till his head popped of. This is called redneck fun.
Those boys were NOT rednecks, they were THUGS.

Llana, Thug is part of the description of a redneck. Thug is universal, but redneck is more specific. That's my point, the handle "redneck" goes deeper than someone with a tanned neck. It's frightening to me, and worse here in GA than it ever was in TX. I don't mean to offend, Llana, I have just come to an understanding since I've been here, and I'm still trying to deal with it in the best way I know how.

No, thug is NOT part of the description of a redneck. Are there rednecks that are thugs, yes, but not all rednecks are thugs. And to include thug as part of the description of a redneck is as ridiculous as saying all black folks are thugs because of those that are gang members. I know a bunch of rednecks; some of them are thugs, most are not. They would be highly insulted, as I am, if someone told them that thug is part of the description of a redneck. Rednecks are country folk, generally thought to be on the poorer side, southern hillbilly people from back in the woods who haven't made it out to main street yet.Another load of baloney. I know plenty of rednecks that have never lived anyplace but the city - from Texas to Louisiana to Colorado and places in between, have jobs that pay into 6 figures, have masters degrees, etc. Heck, I know rednecks that are bank presidents, geologists, engineers, lawyers, and doctors. And as far as NASCAR goes, I know a ton of people that love NASCAR that aren't even close to being rednecks in this lifetime. Hell, some of them couldn't be rednecks if they took lessons! llana

well i can't speak for the north, east or west but redneck is a very familiar term in the south. in my area it can refer to someone with less education, whose family tree doesn't branch too far, that has a tendancy to never have any money no matter how hard they work - usually due to an overindulgance on budweiser; or it can be a good 'ole redneck that has a much better family tree that has chosen to seek less education and drink more budweiser; or it can be a well-educated, classy person who likes to call themselves a redneck after they've had to much budweiser and also can begin to act like one under the influence of budweiser. so hell i guess here it's anybody who drinks budweiser lol ;D. some people take great pride in being one and calling themselves one. others are greatly offended to be called one even if they are one. most of ours are the good 'ole rednecks and just want to drink beer, play cards, and go to the races. beer drinkers and hell-raisers about sums it up. they are usually not dangerous and their criminal activity is limited to drunk driving, illegal hunting, and fighting (usually amongst friends or in pool halls and always involving budweiser).

I used to drink a 12 pack a day, everyday, of "EDwieser" as it was called then, and I am as far from a red neck as one can be. Hippies and red necks are exact opposites. EDweiser, who got wiser and stopped drinking!

Kim, I think your definition of a redneck is more correct than the others offered, except the Budweiser part! I, personally, drink Miller Light. Although a formal education is something the majority of rednecks don't have, there are some highly educated rednecks and some very intelligent rednecks with no formal education. These days it's hard to really describe or define a redneck - each area of the country has their own, I guess. When I was growing up a redneck was someone fiercely independent, self sufficient, usually one that was a farmer/rancher, mechanic, factory work or other kind of blue collar worker. It used to mean folks that didn't "cotton to" drug use, alternate lifestyles, or fancy folks from the city. It was more of a state of mind and encompassed people of all economic levels. Heck, these days, rednecks like heavy metal and rap music and that was unheard of when I was growing up! Far as I'm concerned no self respecting redneck could possibly like heavy metal or rap! d**n, this redneck has got to go do the wash and get it hung out over the fence to dry while the weather is nice! llana

*smile* Llana ... that's why I put "generally thought to be" in there.
You nailed it Llana, this is the description I like best, especially the "didn't cotton to drug use" part. I remember being called a redneck (along with a few other choice words) because I wouldn't participate ... long before it was a very common term. I had forgotten about that. Like I said though, after Jeff Foxworthy came out with the jokes, it really doesn't bother most people I know to be called a redneck. Doesn't bother me anyway, ever since I moved to the town I live in now I've been called a redneck simply because of my preference for country music, country attire (including a cowboy hat), having horses and liking beer (no glass for me please, my preference is Busch Light). Funny how the beer is a "necessary" part of being a redneck. ;D I also totally agree that "thug" should not be a part of the description.
LOL ... isn't a "hoser" just a Canadian redneck that drinks Labatts and likes hockey?

Ok, one last word. I guess I'm giving my version of redneck, as a very negative thing. If thug is not part of the description, thens it's not a true redneck in my book. Redneck, to me, is meant to be insulting. Like calling some one a bad word that can't even be typed on this forum. When I say redneck, there ain't nothing nice about it. If you don't fit the description, I can't be insulting you because, to me, youre not a red neck. Or an MF, or a bas*a*d, ect. I don't care if you live in a mansion, if you beat your wife and disrespect others for fun, your a redneck, a sorry S.O.B. If you arent a sorry S.O.B., your not a redneck.

That's ok Cookie, it's alright to disagree. You have your opinion of what a redneck is in, mine just doesn't agree with yours. Personally anyone who beats their partner/significant other/child or whatever is just a plain ol' bas***d! They don't even rate as a redneck.

Hi Andy, I thought you could use some visuals to help with the definition of Redneck. I live in southern Mississippi and have witnessed some amazing stuff. Here is just a sampling of what you might see.... Also, rednecks are everywhere. You might have seen some in you part of the world and just didn't realize it. Enjoy... ;D [glow=blue,2,300]Brett[/glow]

We had a redneck issue down here a while ago. The rednecks, not all, some, decided Canadians were the reason our country was falling apart. Mind you, I have no idea where that came from. I am however colour blind and I do not see regional distinctions. At any rate, the rednecks decided to torment the Canadian residents we call snowbirds. Some houses got damaged and some folks got hurt. For what? We have several Canadians who have booths at the fleamarket. I find them to be professional, decent and their standards help us sell to our customers. We have several families from other than America countries near us also. You know, they are just other folks trying to have a better life. The folks considered rednecks come by and badtalk them. For what. Perhaps it is an aspect of human nature to put down decent folks. Some take it much further. I remember back when, when it was fun to beat the snot out of hippies. I got broken bones, lacerations, broken teeth. People would say when I asked for help, what do you expect, you are an Hippie. You deserve it. I took up Martial Arts untill I was a teacher. The beatings stopped. They still tried but they did not get very far. That was when I learned, when you take out one of them, the rest go home and get reinforcements. They never face up, they wait untill your hands are full, or you have your back turned, or they break something you care about. Once again, I do not speak about a group in general. Just a very small few. But the fear lasts a lifetime. I guess that is life. I choose to not live in fear, nor pass it on. We have started getting rednecks in our shop. They like our jewelery. I have to put aside my feelings to be the professional I want to be and things go well. I still have the memories of the past. A redneck taught me how to put soap bars in a pillow case and break bones, mine. Balance. Hopefully not too liberal, not too conservative, I have my dreams but they are not dreams when they hurt another.

i've thought about this thread a lot in the past few days...trying to weigh my initial response to what you all have had to say. my conclusion is that there are two kinds of rednecks, one very aptly described by Cookie (the evil redneck) and the good ol' boy and proud-of-it Hick (the good, but simple and proud redneck).
living relatively close (two hours) to the Canadian border, i've met some absolutely beautiful and friendly Canadians, likewise, on vacation, i've run into the rudest most obnoxious variety as well. (not quite as bad as the French)....
i've been in other countries and cringed when some of my countrymen have come into a restaurant or store, and more than once have pretended NOT to be American because i was so ashamed at their behavior and general disdain for other cultures and traditions.
so i guess i'm saying there are good'uns and bad'uns and probably a lot in between, no matter what country, what region, what dialect or education.
Andy, you have Brommies and Cloggies and southern folk, westerners (where the cider apples grow) and i just read about Chavs.....from what i understand to be the gang riche? all of Europe is getting a little less civilised as far as i can tell.....it was only a thin veneer to start with. as a planet, we seem to take one step forward and two steps back.
Perhaps we need to do a mass airdrop (like Thailand did just recently of oragami dragons) of tinfoil hats so that we can ALL tune in and stop cutting each others heads off...
i digress. but then, that is why Andy created this section, yes?
i was in the UK once for Christmas, it was one of the most memorable times in my life. we arrived in Heathrow late in the day and decided to stay at a nearby hotel and rest before heading out. as we were enjoying dinner and a few decent G&T's only to hear of the bombing and crash of PanAm 103 in Lockerbie.
the decorations in the Mayfair district were unlike anything i'd ever seen before, devastatingly beautiful, and listening to Big Ben chime in the New Year was a whole world away from watching the Ball fall in Times Square on the box.
it's nice to be in electronic touch with y'all,
KD

Well said, KD. Here I am trying to start a spiritual journey to the God light, to rise to a level of pure love and spread it out to the universe, and look what I've done. It's the very thing I'd like to change, just don't know how. 3 times in the last 4 years I've had to call the police from my store, twice because a parent was physicaly abusing a child (one was handicapped) and once because a man, angry because he went to a car show in Helen, the parking lot was wet and muddy, he blew the engine out of his truck and lost his shoes. His wife and kids were there as he tried to pick a fight. He wanted to use my trashcan to spit tobacco juice in so I got him a cup with a paper towel in it. He spit on my floor instead. I'm trying so hard to spread the light, and then a redneck comes along... Guess I'm bitter and need to study on it more.
