Over here we have
"scousers", "mancunians", "southerners", "northerners""brummies" etc.
What exactly is a "redneck" in terms of the US?
Is it like a "roadhouse dude" who goes out and swiggs a bottle and lands a punchup?
I get the impression that a redneck is a "tough" ass.
Over here, the things we label people with are location related - IE a "scouser" is from liverpool, whereas a "brummie" is from the midlands or birmingham.
A "redneck" however - sounds like its not area related, more like "I can be a redneck nomatter where I'm from."
I think shania (sp) twain for example is a "redneck" - "a person with some attitude".... in her case in the showbiz front.
For the record - I'm a "northerner".

Andy, at the risk of sounding predjudice, I will try to explain. "Redneck" is almost a dirty word, probably should be. It denotes not only someone of low intellegence, but a person who likes it that way. Narrow minded, ingnorent because it's easier to be that way than look for a different answer. "My daddy beat my momma, so...". And darned proud of it. Hates you and me because we aren't rednecks. Has little or no respect for anyone other than themselves. Stays primarily in a drunken stupor so they don't have to think too much. Works for beer or drug money. Can usualy be spotted sporting a Rebel flag in some fashion and will kick your ass if you have anything negative to say about it. Or just because "I don't like your looks. boy..." That's a redneck. On this forum, there may be people who love the simple life, hunt, fish, drive pick up trucks and have a kick ass attitude, but they are NOT rednecks. Jusy good old boys and girls, enjoying life and harming none.

Today, a good ole boy is what a redneck was. Today, a redneck is a person with limits. Then, a redneck was a person who worked hard. The term redneck came from the deep tan on the back of his neck. A redneck was a person of fiber. The royalty, and royalty wanna be's in this country in the turn of the century, called a person a redneck to insinuate he was less than. So the term migrated. A plethora of jokes hinge around redneck. Usually some self-sufficient attempt lubricated by Bud. A Roach Toaster, hung in a tree for a wilderness retreat, a pickup truck with plastic in the bed full of water, full of rednecks with brewski in hand. Etc. Then a redneck was a man who could shoe an horse, plow the field, build the house with sod, make his knives, and rifle. Today, a redneck is someone who is full of prejudice, reacts with fear, strongly, or does classless dumb stuff. A good ole boy is someone who is connected, doesn't care about much, won't tresspass, and if you leave him alone, he will let you be. A redneck seems to have to prove something. Now mind you, I have never met the true stereotype. I have heard and have had pointed out. I have never met a stupid person of Polish ancestry however I have heard of dumb polaks. I am swedish and I have heard every dumb swede joke that came my way. I have never met the stereotype swede. I have known rednecks however. They do not seem to meet the profile as much as they are supposed to. They are unique people however, especially when they are full of Bud and in front of more people doing redneck things. Now Bubbas. They are a group of folks that is very hard to describe. We leave Bubbas alone. Bubbas and people mix like oil and water. Rednecks are kinda a cartoon character. Bubbas, however, they can be downright dangerous. Kinda clanish, definately opinionated, and definately loud in a crowd. Here in Floriduh, Bubba runs things. You never meet him, see him, or know his name. Everybody knows him except you, somebody should have let you know Bubba's rules, anybody could have told you. In reality, Bubba is Themy. They, is made of Anybody, Everybody, Somebody. Nobody is left out. Bubba owns Everybody. Somebody tells you the rules that don't make sense. Anybody is the tattletale. They all get together and, "Well, we didn't hurt Nobody." Nobody is the poor dumb bunny that didn't know it had to be that way. When you want the truth, ask Nobody. Nobody will say, " I don't know, why don't you find out?" Nobody says," It might work, why don't you try it?" NObody says," Why not?" So Bubba is in charge of They. Rednecks hang Roach Toasters from trees. Nobody thinks for themselves. People of Polish descent are pretty smart, Swedes can actually think, and Good ole boys don't much care and mind their own business. Who did win that war?

Ok Cookie3rocks - I'm listening. So I surmise........... A *****redneck***** is the term used to describe a (not sure about male or female) person :- a) I am thick - and I like being thick - so eff off. b) I can sell you some drugs, and if you dont pay up you are fooooooked. c) I am a lost cause because I watched dad beat on mom - and thats my excuse for being like this. Do *rednecks* come "regional" though Cookie3rocks? I.E. Are all rednecks from "New York" or "Miami" where all the dealers in drugs etc. are? And you can beat on mom in an 18 buck motel? I get the impression that true redneck culture is based outside of these locations, like rednecks are not in cities but are like mountain men and such. Dont forget that as I havent been over there yet all I see is whats on TV!!!!!! Be it a film or a documentary etc. I reckon "redneck" is a naughty dude who wants to "brawl" in a bar after a few beers and what not. Just my thinking - thanks for the explanation cookie3rocks. I'm probably totally and utterly wrong though as always. - You "pilgrims" and all!!!!!" Andy.

I guess my terminology is a bit off. The line between "Redneck" and "Bubba" seems very fine. Untill it's time to vote. Then the Bubbas come out in force. Am I getting, Doc?

Cookie, you are getting close. If it is an issue, Bubba always wins, fairly or not. If Bubba gets something, he wins and too bad. Judges vote for Bubba, business will not do business with you unless Bubba says it is ok. But, if you ever meet Bubba and hit him real hard, he falls down and crys untill you stop. Once you let him go, he gets his Bubba wannabe's and they break into your house when you are asleep and put the hurt into you behind your back. Bubba always gets away with it.

They are primarily sothern US, and have a laugh at the expense of others, it doesn;t matter who. I lived in TX most of my life, near a town called Jasper. In that town, rednecks tied an innocent black man to the bumper of a truck and drug him down the road till his head popped of. This is called redneck fun. THAT"S a redneck. I have meet the stereotype, it has made me a better person. I try now to bring love, whether someone wants it or not. If I can reach someone, anyone at all... Well, anyway,

Andy, the todays Redneck is interesting. They used to be gearheads, or just bullys. Todays redneck, from the few I have met, seem to have real hate in their soul. It is hard to explain. They are not hard, or even intolerant, totally, they just like to hit first and think later. Especially when full of Bud. They even have a look in their eye, and their jaw seems to always be clenched. They also seem to want the old ways that never really were. For right or wrong, it is their way or the highway.

You are making tables for Big Bird? Big Bird is a character in a bizarre childrens program. Howard Stern looks like Big Bird in a way.

Rednecks are country folk, generally thought to be on the poorer side, southern hillbilly people from back in the woods who haven't made it out to main street yet.
After Jeff Foxworthy came out with all the "You might be a Redneck" jokes, being a redneck didn't seem to be so bad. Up here in the north, if you like country music, you are a redneck. It seems to be somewhat hillbilly, country, western, cowboy and NASCAR related.

Do a search for "You Might Be A Redneck" ... some of them are hilarious.
