Looks like fun, do you do this by yourself or are you part of a team? The pic of the memorial, what's it a memorial for?

That's the "Photo of the Hour" Rockds... It changes all the time at random so it would be hard to guess which one it was while you were looking. The VIGPS site is the local portal to GPS adventure here. I just won coin #52 about half an hour ago over here: www.cachunuts.com/coinquest/default.asp It was one helluvan adventure! ;D Won me a limitted mint coin as a trophy too!! Finishing 16 objectives & decoding that last hidden piece of the treasure map... man was GOLDEN! TOO much fun, really! Good Times & Good Memories of an adventure that brought me & my GF outdoors together. What could be better? Well, maybe that once in a lifetime rock motherlode!

Well I can't believe it! It's all over already!! Less than a whole day & Team Phoenix has won it!!! It's almost statistically impossible but they completed the entire contest by 4:35pm, which was supposed to take two days or more. I made it about halfway before having to call it off due to darkness. It turned out that a boat or a very well timed ferry ride was needed to obtain the final position on a smaller island in the strait so it would have been over for me right there in any case. Kind of a bummer for me since I pulled alot of strings & put myself out about $45 for the day to get in on it & gave it a real good go! I had alot of bad luck picking the wrong positions too many times before getting the right ones so I knew I was not getting first but it was a real shock to see one team had already finished! Talk about HARDCORE!!! Now I need something good to happen to cheer me up Maybe Kim's rocks will get here on Tuesday to brighten my week a bit...

Oh-ya! I had lots of fun, it was just grueling & intense! Well worth what I put into it though. It could've gone either way. It was a matter of picking one correct position out of four possible positions about five times in a row to win. The only way to rule out a position was to go there & search for a clue. It was either there or it wasn't and I did alot of looking for something that wasn't there before I got halfway through it. If I had one more hour of daylight I could have got to stage four. I've been pretty grumpy since then but you know the saying: Ya gotta be in it to win it! One thing's for sure, I'll not be forgetting it any time soon! Good times & good memories...

Sorry you didn't win. Does everyone stop after someone or team completes the challenge or do you finish anyway - just to say you did it?

Only if you can do it the same day because the photo & co-ords of the final position were posted on the site after it was won so if you didn't finish close behind the winners then there is no point in finishing after that.

LCARS - How do you post if you're in the middle of nowhere? Or find out that someone already won. Cell phone?

We can have "stay at home" contacts that keep us aprised in the field & they can do positioning work for us while we run around chasing clues. I don't have all the fancy toys & crap that some people do so I'm just trying to hold my own against some of the bad boys who've been doing this for years...
The win was based on the time stamp of your final position reading, not how fast you got it posted.
They email it while they're still out in the field just to rub it in the faces of everyone still struggling with the previous positions.

Full contact GPS. I'd get me one of them thar cell phone zappers.
Wouldn't mind having one just for driving around town. To go along with the grill-mounted 50 cal.

Once you have one, you will wonder how you ever got by without it! I recommend one with a quad helix antenna if you're using it in the vehicle. They tend to keep a better signal lock while you're moving through intermittent obstructions better than the internal patch antennas do. Also work better around thick trees. I just found out that I goofed up & didn't find the clue bottle at one of the positions I went to so I could have finished in the top three but instead I spent the rest of the day chasing after something that wasn't there Live & learn for next time...
