It finally got here, the metal detector that I ordered in January 24th. It was shipped right away but good ol' UPS sent it all over the US ... everywhere but to Minnesota. It's still floating somewhere around California, I think San Pablo was it's lastest stop. Anyway, I have to tell you ... Sean at www.detection.com is very serious about pleasing his customers and was very upset at what was happening with UPS. We gave it until yesterday at which time he boxed up another, included two more gifts along with the five that originally came with it and sent it overnight. If anyone is thinking about getting one, I highly recommend these folks. Now, if the snow would go away, I'd be off and running. I'll be taking it to Iowa with me, my grandson is so excited to try it out. Don't think they have any snow down there, but I suppose the ground could be frozen. Wouldn't you know, it's below zero outside so I can't even go pretend and practice. Ok, enuff babbling, can you tell I'm excited. *smile* ;D ;D

Congrats Cher! Those things are a lot of fun. We have a little kiddie model, and when you can't use it outside, my kids like to drag it along the floor and yell out "Mom, there's a nail in this spot, and another one over here, OH! and here's another" They're also handy to have when you loose your keys in the snow In the summer time, I'll throw out a handful of pennies out in the grass, and send the kids to find each and every one (I make up some story like "I had a pocket full of pennies, and when I was spinning to make myself dizzy, they just flew out!"... They're always eager to help when you come up with some sort of silly story) Have a good time with that metal detector!

LOL I couldn't stand it, I had to go out and try it, cold or not. That is so cool, I just need to learn what the beeps mean. Arrrgggghhhhhhhhhh I wish it was warmer!

LOL I don't know Kim, when I put in the number it shows Minnesota as the shipping address but when I go to detail ... WOW! It went from Sunnyvale, CA to someplace in Illinois then back to Sunnyvale then back to Illionois then back to Sunnyvale again, then to San Pablo. Don't know where it's at today but it's the most stupid thing I've ever seen. Apparently no one knows what MN means.

Yeah but you can't do it in the winter when the perma frost has set in, unless I suppose if you had a portable jack hammer. I have no intention of spending any more than I have on metal detecting. I got everything I needed with this one, coil cover, carry case, padded headphones, rechargeable batteries, battery charger, a pocket apron and a book on Treasure hunting. Only thing I want is to save enough $$ so I can get one for my grandson. I'm trying to get my family to go all together to get one for him since I can't do it alone. I know he'd love one, his eyes almost bugged out of his head when he found out about mine.

What kind do you both have? I've been wanting one but don't know which kind to get. I was told not to get a coin shooter, they suck, I've been told.

Everyone has been raving about the Garrett Ace 250. I personally have an old radio shack/bounty hunter Sharp Shooter II. Once upon a time I had the cadillac of detectors, the Whites XLT Spectrum but that is another story. Cher the two hardest things to learn on a detector are what each beep means and how to dig a plug to recover your target. The first one is easy to learn. Turn the machine on and set it on a non metal coffee table or something. Take off all jewelry and wave a coin of each denomination in front of the coil and listen to the difference. If you have any wheat pennies and silver coins, wave those also. Wave a gold piece of jewelry and a silver piece. You will be surprised at the difference in tones. Cutting a plug takes practice. First you have to learn to "pinpoint" your target. I'm sure that is covered in your manual, but bascially when you get a target, slooooooooooow down. When you get a consistant signal going left to right, then "X" the target. Go up and down and diagonally and where you hear the sound is where you start digging. Cut a horse shoe shaped flap around the target, pull it back on the "hinged" edge and look for your coin. Take a bar towel with you to put the dirt from the hole on. After you find target, put dirt back in hole, put flap back down, step on it firmly and you shouldn't be able to see that you were ever there. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS fill in your holes. That is the main reason that detectorists get a bad name, they leave holes looking like a herd of gophers in heat rampaged the area. Good luck and PM if you have questions, I'll do what I can to help

I got the Garret ACE 250 from www.detection.com/garrett/ $199.00 got me the detector, 5 extra gifts and that includes the shipping too. There's more expensive ones but Ron (michiganrocks) did a lot of research and this is the one that he got so I followed his lead. If you get one, make sure you get a coil cover as one of the free gifts to protect the coil from getting scratched up. Thanks for the info Xena. But didn't you say before not to turn in on in the house?

I'd like to get one that will work under water also, or is that just the waterproof coil?

I think it's just a waterproof coil, you couldn't take the whole thing underwater.

There are detectors that are made for under water. Most detectors are waterproof up to the control box.
Its best not to use it in the house ie, turn it on and run it over the floors/walls etc because it can mess up the circuitry in the control box. If you have it inside with the coil OFF the floor, its ok to air test.

Another way to learn your machines beeps and boops is this. Take a large piece of cardboard you can't see through ( paneling or plywood works too) Have hubby tape different types of coins, pulltabs, nails, screws, cheap rings/jewelry, etc etc to the board. Take it outside and turn put it on the ground with the objects on the bottom. Then run your coil over it and see what it tells you. Listen to the different sounds, look at the read out. See how many it and you identify correctly. Then try just identifying using the sounds. Keep doing that. Practice makes perfect. When the weather warms up and the ground is less hard, do the same thing only in the dirt. Its called a "test garden". This will also help you learn to retrieve your target without digging pot holes

Soon as it warms up, I'm going to play with it outside. That's a good way to practice, I was just going to sit on the steps and toss stuff on the ground to practice with which I suppose could work to start, then do the hidden stuff. Thanks Xena!

That sounds like it's going to be alot of fun Cher! We don't have any snow on the ground right now, but we are expecting a major snow storm of the season which has already started. We are suppose to get 6 to 8 inches in our area.
