Here's just a glimpse of what we've been seeing out back of the place lately. The herd is about 15-20 in size, but it's hard to fit them all in the camera angle.

I'd have my tree stand hanging back there and sitting in it wearing my camo with my bow in waiting.

Actually, during hunting season, some of the neighbors do come out and shoot. I'm not much of a hunter, myself.

Aren't those elks? And, aren't they pretty big beasts? I have read a book where the writer won't hunt elk because they are so big and too much work to haul out of the back country. But, if they are only feet from your back porch, hmmm. Cal

Yeah, I think themz Elk. We have them around Flag, never been the type of person to think, "What a beautiful animal, think I'll kill it!" But I have nothing against hunting at all, it's just not for me.

They are elk. Sorry I didn't identify that earlier.

They are fairly good sized elk, also. I would have stood by one so that you could see their size, but the elk wouldn't go for that.

Wow, that's awesome!! I'm not a hunter either, mainly because I just can't kill anything. That's a great pic!

They are quite like deer - they'll get into your garden, or eat the heads off of tulips that are about to bloom. Most of our stuff is too close to the house for them to want to go and eat, though. And most of the stuff we grow blooms after May, when they aren't around. They are mostly seen in the spring and fall, and in the morning and late afternoon.
I tried Elk meat once when I was younger. It was ground up, and certainly had a different taste to it. I'm not a huge eater of cuts of any kind of red meat, anyway. Just never developed a taste for it.

Does this mean you get to enjoy the sounds of the males bugling in the fall/winter? We drew out for deer this year during rut, and elk make some really strange noises late at night!

When we first moved to Flag we went camping up near the Peaks, about sunset I thought someone was being murdered! It was an elk bugling as I later found out. Now I think it is a beautiful sound.

No, apparently we don't get to hear much from them. Maybe they have moved on by then, or the house is well insultated from sound.
