they can get the frogs right in the front yard but i'm not cooking them! i was throwing ball with my daughter this evening and she said "that duck keep 'stracting me". it wasn't a duck but a big bullfrog. sands if you listen when you go out at night you'll hear them. if you take a light you can see their eyes and hand grab them. only problem is the cottonmouths hate the light and attack.

We are having a significant drought here, the water table has fallen 30ft. Our yard is full of Cotton mouths! But, they are slow, and easy to spot and take out. It is really different. They are really dangeous, and remarkably slow at his moment. Something big has changed here.

doc all the ones i've ever seen out of water just don't move. they stand their ground and keep an eye on you. it's like they hope you'll come over - kind of a dare. now in the water, i've seen them swim away fast, slow or attack. i showed sands some pics of cottonmouths so he'd know what to look for. but they don't always look the same - the older ones are more black with less pattern or none and the younger ones have some pattern showing. sometimes they put off a real musky smell. unfortunately most of the times that i'm pretty sure i'm smelling one, i don't see it. i showed him a pic of liza too so he won't kill her. i've read the speckled kingsnake is very territorial and will keep cottonmouths away. any help is welcomed lol.

Much as warmer weather sounds so nice, I couldn't live with giant bullfrogs and killer snakes.

kim...love the kingsnakes...they will usually eat the smaller cottonmouths..and rattlesnakes..they are not affected by the venom of either...the only butt whooping i took from my grandad..was because i killed a kingsnake when i was about 11 i think...i didnt know any better...just knew it was a snake...
my grandparents lived in apopka florida on a lake...and i can remember him telling me...son smell that odor...thats the king of snakes...keeping them rattlers out.
so it may be you are actually smelling the kingsnakes...it did stink to me...im not sure of any of this about the smell...just what old grandad said.

Just so ya know Sands...It's not really brains! It's actually organs & what they call fat & it sits in area behind the head. First time we had a crawfish boil @ husbands relatives in Louisiana, did the traditional boil w/them. Plopped em on newspaper on table & they showed me how to eat them. Well, I'm a yankee (to them that's like saying you have leprosy) & WE DON'T SUCK BRAINS OUT OF ANYTHING! Then they showed me how to use your finger to dig the stuff out if'n ya don't want to suck it. Still couldn't do it. I found a place online to buy ready to go crawfish with the "fat" intact so that I can do Gumbo & Etoufee. so that's what I do.
