I have a boxer who won't eat for the past two days now and we noticed his glands (?) are swollen. I called the vet and they want to see him today. She said it may be his lymph nodes-which wouldn't be a good thing. He is our first son...he gets treated the same as my human son! I know everyone says this about their pet, but he is absolutely by far the best dog ever....SO good with children!! Never jumps on people, always happy. I don't know what I'll do if it's bad news. I know I shouldn't think the worst but something is telling me they aren't going to say, "it's strep throat...here's an antibiotic."

Just got back from the vet...he took a blood sample and said try to stay positive. He thinks it's lymphoma...which he thinks because it's not just the nodes in his neck, the ones on his back legs and chest are also enlarged. He said if it isn't lymphoma, then it might be an infection which he gave me antibiotics for (my fingers are crossed!) He says to call on Saturday (which I will have to take a break from my scuba test) and call. This is so hard! At least he is drinking water, which he said to make sure he does. He said if it is lymphoma, then there are options like Chemo and some predizone (spelling?) but going onto the boxerworld website, predizone wreaks havoc on dogs. He also said Chemo costs thousands of dollars just in the first year and we don't have insurance on him. I'm going to stay positive and hope it's just an infection. Thank you for the prayers and good vibes. Fugger needs all the help he can get right now!!

My first 2 dogs were Boxers; Murphy & Ricochet. Boxers are great dogs! Gentle, Loyal, Obedient, etc.. All the good qualities dogs should have.
I sure hope Fugger gets better soon Beech. I've always considered my pets as members of the family proper so I fully understand and can certainly empathize with your situation. Will be sending positive thoughts and prayers up for Fugger...and you too Beech.
Oh yea...one other thing. My Boxers used to get strange little benign growths on them all the time and they never caused any problems. I'm hoping that Fuggers' is the same...

Thanks Blarneystone. It means a lot to hear about someone else who knows how special boxers are. I don't think there is a better dog on this planet! He still won't eat anything except hotdogs...I use those to give him his meds. I just want him as comfortable as possible and as happy as usual. My son keeps him on his toes!

I guess you haven't heard the results from the tests yet... Man it's gotta be tough waiting on that call. At least he's eating something. Keeping fingers crossed for ya Beech...Hang in there!

Awww darn I am so sorry, poor little guy. At least he's eating hotdogs and drinking, it's better than nothing. I am so praying that you get good news and he's just got some kind of infection that the antibiotics will clean up in no time. I hated the prednisone that I had to take, I can't imagine what it would do to a dog and am really praying he won't have to.

Thanks a bunch. The more I read up on it, the worse it sounds. I think the net is good and bad when searching for info. I got two sites off of boxerworld.com, and the one: www.wearethecure.net/lymphoma.htm doesn't make it sound like he has much of a chance. The vet said to call on tomorrow so inbetween getting certified for scuba I'm probably going to hear some pretty depressing news. I know I have to stay positive though, but he said (vet) that more than one section of nodes are enlarged and that usually isn't a good thing. Thanks for the prayers...it is comforting coming here and reading that others are thinking of my baby!

Thanks all for the well wishes. Fugger is still the same and we should hear back from the vet tomorrow. They did say to call on Saturday and they may or may not have the results, but I was doing my certification for scuba (I passed!! yeah!!) and I thought if I would find out half way thru my tests that I would never complete them. Fugger ate some more food today since we cut up a whole hotdog real tiny so he got about a cup of food in him. I told my hubby if the news is bad tomorrow that he eats steak for the rest of his days! I know he would eat that! His glands feel bigger in his throat and I don't know if that is the antibiotics or not. I'm just wondering...the one website I went to said that once they have lymphoma that they have 3 or 4 weeks. I don't know what that exactly means since I think he's had this for a while. He still chased a bunny today like his old self, but I can tell it wore him out. Thank you all for your thoughts for Fugger. Like I said and I'm sure all with pets feel this way, they are family and he is like a son and I couldn't imagine how it's going to be around here. Thank you so much for thinking about us!! Thanks for the Karma LCARS!! I hope that stuff works!!

Congrats on passing your scuba test, I'll be hoping for the best for Fugger that it's just an infection that will soon be gone.

Was thinking about Fugger this morning while getting ready for work and remembering my Boxers. Murphy - my first Boxer - used to knock us kids down and take our shoes off, then he would play keep away. He loved to give you a lick right on the face when you least expected it...he had a tongue like a road map! He was a great dog! ....and still lives on in my memories.
Still praying for Fugger. Hope he gets better soon!

Just got the bad news... Fugger has cancer and needs to get evaluated for how far it's spread. I checked out a website that lists good dogfood by stars... www.dogfoodanalysis.com and bought him a good brand (Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul (5 star)). He's been on Eukanuba his whole life and it doesn't rate that high...I wish I would have known!! I brought it home and he ate 2 cups of it. More than he's had in over a week!! So I'm being refered to an oncologist here in Pittsburgh and I hope that they have something...anything positive to say about our baby. Right now I just want to go sit with him. Thank you all for keeping him and us in your thoughts and prayers!

Oh I am very very sorry to hear this, I was so hoping it was an infection. Please let us know when you feel up to it how he's doing and what course of treatment they are planning. I feel so bad for you.

Beech, just a couple of thoughts on your pal---I am so sorry that this has happened to you and your much loved companion! I've raised Weims for almost 25 years, and the Good Ones always leave us too soon, don't they? Dog food--the site you mentioned, did you happen to see a person's or company's name attached with it? I didn't, and that made me suspicious. But they did mention some of the better foods out there, but you know, at this point, I'd give Fugger any kind of food he wanted. Even if it was Oreos and Fritos! I have this thought too--dogs cannot understand that today they are very sick, but after they go thru hell to try to get better, life may or may not be good for them again. I always go by what I see as the quallity of the dog's days, does he still have joy at the usual things? Does his tail wag? Does he sleep a lot and seem depressed and sick? Once the pain is there and the quality of life is gone, I always figure that I owe a faithful companion the right decision, even tho it is the hardest one to make. I'll be honest too in admiting that I am guilty of keeping a dog 'too long' and to this day feel i still fell so bad about that. So go with your gut feeling, your stomach will tell you what to do before your heart takes action. I chose not to do the cancer treatments for my Chase, to me it would have just been torture to him as he would never understand that someday he MIGHT feel better. Not GOOD, but better--and for how long? I felt that he deserved better than this. I fed him extra good things to eat when he could eat, and he slept on a super soft bed. I about petted the fur right off that guy, and when none of this was magic anymore, I did the humane thing for him. I owed him that much. Again, I am so sorry for the bad news you have gotten. Nona

That's so sad Beech. I have an older terrier & it's having the usual problems of an older dog plus a small chest tumor. It is starting to look like "that" time might not be far off for her too. I don't know if/when i'll have the heart to raise another dog after she goes...? Here's a pic of her having a "Don't come near my bowl" moment, for comic relief.
