From the Tahoma thread, although you've expressed the same sentiment more times than I care to count: Looks like Don had some of the rarer material. How wonderful to be able to afford that kind of rock to smash. Hey Spacegold, What's with you man? You keep on and on about me "smashing" rocks. Frankly, if I buy them and want to pound them into dust, that's entirely up to me, and is absolutely none of your business. You've made your point many times, it's long since grown tiresome, and I'm PO'd with you constantly harping at me. I've never picked on you about anything, why are you always on my case? Please give it a rest, man! -Don

Don, I've run into the "I'm not letting you do that to these rocks" thing already. One guy wanted to sell me some beautiful amethyst till he found out I was looking for stuff to tumble. Then he refused to sell. Some people are just really passionate about the lives of rocks.
The best solution I've come up with is just don't tell people what you're going to do with the rocks.

I'm sure he was just teasing you, he sure seems like a nice man to me! if you look at it as someone who is financially limited, and loves rocks, the meaning was probably "man that's a gorgeous rock, but if i could afford it, i sure wouldn't break it, i'd just admire it". I'm sure he meant no harm. i have some rocks that i need to break cause they won't fit in my little saw, but i'm afraid they'll break into unusable weird pieces. if i had a ton of them, i wouldn't care. take a deep breath and just be happy that you CAN afford to smash them! (smile) i'm not siding with anyone, just trying to look at it from another view and don't want you guys to get into another war on here.

Seig, you are too nice. This has gone way beyond teasing.

When i first started i didn`t have any extra money to buy 4 or 5 lbs of tumbling rocks so i used river rock and some of them looked pretty good but were to big to tumble so i smashed them up, even today i may not want to use a hammer on certain rocks, but if i want to tumble rocks some of them will get smashed, look at the beautifull tumbled rocks in the photo section,99% of them were smashed by somebody,if i`m lucky and get a museum piece no i won`t bust it up, but everything else it`s a possible................................Rocky

Sieg, if it was just teasing, I'm okay with that. But here's the original post of his from last October, and he's been on my case ever since then. This didn't sound much like teasing to me. If the guy can't bear to see nice rough broken up and tumbled, then what the heck is he reading a rock tumbling forum for? (And in this case, I still haven't even broken up the rough he was referring to, he got it mixed up with some core-drilled scrap that I broke up.) -Don That picture makes me want to puke. Somewhere on this board Don posted a picture of what this beautiful piece of bresciated jasper looked like before he smashed it into these ugly smithereens. Nice work, Don. I always wondered what a hundred dollars worth of cabs would look like when destroyed with a hammer.

I agree. It seems there's always a comment about hammering rock with Spacegold. It's old and over. Let it rest. Tonja

I like hammering rocks, great way to take out your frustrations, not to mention getting some nice tumbling rough. Some people just aren't into cabs and that's perfectly ok! Don does a beautiful job making his tumbled rocks shine! Just remember! If you're going to smash rocks, make sure they are covered with something to keep flying shards down and WEAR EYE PROTECTION! Smashing rocks is never going to stop and it's everyone's right to do so if that's what they purchase their rocks for. Beautiful tumbled rocks are just as nice and just as important as cabs or freeforms. If a person gets their enjoyment from tumbling ONLY why shouldn't we be allowed to buy beautiful rocks to smash? Nothing says we should be only allowed to tumble driveway gravel, although I've seen some really nice looking polished driveway rocks too. Rocks are just that ... rocks! Some are just more expensive than others. There's some that buy what they can afford and some that buy what they can't afford (y'all raise your hand now if you've been there). ;D There's also some that would rather put the $$ into buying rocks to tumble than into purchasing expensive equipment to cut it up so you can tumble it anyway. I don't have expensive equipment but I do have a cute little Workforce that very nicely cuts up my stuff so I can tumble it. But, I still smash rocks too, better to do that than throw it through my neighbors window when they won't keep their dogs poo in their own yard. Speaking of dog poo, I saw a sign in a yard (shaped like a headstone) that said "Here lies the last dog that poo'd in my yard" ... I think I'll go make one of them. ;D

I saw a shrimp once - it was scrabbling around in a rock pool - sifting sand around like "they" do. Little flipping shrimp shifting stuff round like that - bless him. I meen that aswell.

Yikes I guess I missed this whole thing!!! For what it's worth I honestly don't give a rats behind if Don saws, hammers, dynamites, or whatever- His results speak volumes of a true professional finish!!! Whatever he does should be used as a textbook on how to produce STELLAR results.

Hey Don, I really like your work, no matter how you arrived at it. Cabs are nice, but so are tumbled rocks. It just all depends on what you yourself are looking for. Hey, I say, to each his own. It's not really anybody else's concern.

Hey Don, how's the snow coming up there?

I can't afford a saw, so anything I want to tumble gets smashed - no matter how much it costs, or how beautiful it is. To each their own.

I have a workforce. Sometimes I get crazy and buy a rock that is too big to cut so out comes the cold chisel and maul. The chunks that fly off get tumbled the bigger pieces get cut. Who cares how someone gets to the end result. We all do our hobby in different ways thats what makes it so much fun all the diversity.

Cabs are really pretty yes... but how many can afford the cab machine? Some people use shaped stones for pendants. Some people just collect tumbled rock... (you should see Randy's house!!). I myself wrap tumbled unshaped stones that came from smashing. so what? I like the unshaped natural look, whereas Jeremy likes the cut shaped and formed stuff. If we didnt smash stuff, what would I have to admire? (Not that I dont admire the cut stuff too)

I don't have a saw yet either. Still exploring my options.
I figure having a tumbler is a pretty good thing. I do know people that think anything less than faceting is a waste of good stone. That's their opinion. I like freeform tumbled stones--that's mine.

Hi, i just saw the comments to what I said earlier, and i guess I see your point. that was pretty nasty. I tend to be way too sensitive, and get my feelings hurt easily, so if someone said that to me, i'd prob. go away forever. I got slammed for asking too many questions, so i just PM'd someone for the answer so i wouldn't get slammed again. I didn't like that either. Sieg
