Possible fix?
A few years ago a while working on some black slate for an abstract sculpture it too broke. Many hours and the slate were lost. Rockpup headed right for the clear epoxy. Told him that would leave a clear glue line and would not look nice." Well dad why not color it?" Well why not! Ground up some gold and silver pyrite into dust, mixed it in to the epoxy ( the slow set kind ). Applied a very thin coat of clear on both sides of the break. Then the mix on each side of the break, enough that it squished out. Clamped, waited ,sanded and polished. It looked like a thin gold vein running thru the slate! And it held!!
Like I said, sounds kinda hokey but it worked. If any one tries this we would love to see the results! btw The black cab would look great with a gold vein!

Wow! When one of those beauties breaks, it must feel like someone punched you in the stomach. They were all looking so good! Don't give up, and see if you can find out just how "super" that superglue really is!

I don't really trust the superglue to hold it but Dracco's idea of epoxy and making use of the "broken" space!... How wide a gap did you make with the colored epoxy?

Greetings Joe
I presses the broken slate to a close a fit up as possible allowing the internal peaks and valleys to interlock. With enough of the color mix to come out and fill the surfaces spalls and chips. A popsicle stick shaved thin works as a mini, flexible putty knife. Use a padded vise clamp or tape the two together. If using tape, place it on foil or wax paper while the epoxy sets. If not it tends to want to stay on the work bench for some reason! Had it happen once! ha. ha. Hope this helps.
Be well

Thanx Dracco, it sure helps. I guess I'll be trying something else that's new! It's always something new with this hobby. I do feel for you Slim! Try to think of lost opals as somehow romantic and exotic. Yeah I know. It doesn't work but heck, you tried!

Ouch! That's a nasty break. Did it just crack open in your hands or did it slam down? I hate it when they break!

It's gremlins. Yup, I knew it. Ya got gremlins in your shop. At least the dop wax didn't hold it together 'till you were done with the cab and THEN let go!

Well it about time i can add to this thread. Lol. This piece actaully wasnt broken untill i had to remove it from the dop stick. Which was the only thing holding it together. But this carnelian materila had allot of fractures i would exploit. This piece i was hoping the fracture wouldnt undermind the shape, but it did. However, becasue of how it broke, this cab is more than worth for saving. And i have two options i can go with it. Option 1 would be to make the shape narrow, by using the most amount of what mateiral is left, and just recutting the shape. option 2, which i think i gonna try. The blue stone is Apatite. And i would ahve to cut that break to open it up more. And then recut the blue cab to fit. Not exactly sure how, or what i ahve to do, but i know i caan do it. so i will keep you all posted.

And one more- this time it is Prudent Man Agate, it made it all the way through cutting and polish, only to have me drop it on the hardwood floor as it came off the dop stick- it survived that first fall OK too, but I dropped it again when I went to take pictures and that was all she could take;
