Am I the only one here grinding cabs without dopping sticks. I seem to be missing some of my fingernails and fingerprints. I have wax and sticks but can't get the cab to stay. Jason

Jason: I think Stoner may be a hardcore finger grinder too. I cab travertine now and then on dops and it sticks fine if the wax is hot enough, the stones are oil free and the stone is also hot when dopped. Maybe your stones are still oily?......Mel

Reading the thread's title, I thought I'll see some nice cabs shaped like finger nails . You tricked me. Adrian

I must not be doing it right. I have not drawn blood (yet), but have had a mishapen fingernail or two. I do use the Stoner "Super glued nail dop" for 14 and 50k though.

Tony, maybe that's your secret formula for shining the opals so brightly: adding a drop of blod.

I don't use dops either, but instead use keratin clamps on the ends of my fingers. When they wear out, they are easily replaced. They are available in all shapes and sizes, too.

ouch, Tony! i've heard of an artist's sacrifice to art, but don't you think that goes a bit far?

Bandaids are you friend, specially the plasticky ones - I tried dopping too but it always took too long to get the wax hot enough, so I do them by hand, but I liked the dopping way better and I would if I could afford the time

ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow nephrite. I've given up on ever having nice nails again. Either they get worn off on the grider or they get chewed up wire wrapping. I wish gloves would come back in style.

Jason I'll free-hand them for very rough shaping, but i prefer to have them on sticks as soon as the basic shape is taking form. I also have had lots of problems making the stones stick, my best results have come from pre-heating the stones in a toaster oven to about 250, so the wax stays liquid and gets a little better chance to bond with the stone instead of setting up on contact. They still fall off sometimes, but usually once or twice and they stay put for the rest of the process.

I have never had a cab come off until I put it in the freezer. My set up is so unsophisticated it is funny, somebody called it a jail house setup. I have a old clothes iron turned upside down and clamped in a vise to lay the rock and stick on (I use dowels cut to length). I use an old tart burned of my wife's, which is a ceramic little do-dad that has a reservoir on top and you put a little tea candle in the bottom ( I stack two on top of each and light the top one). The iron is hot in seconds and the wax is melted within a few minutes (just a little wax). Set the hot rock on my bench, dip the stick and set it on the rock, I squirt a little water around the rock to start cooling it and press the wax around the stick and onto the stone when it is cool enough to touch but still pliable. Works every time and I'm rough on them. john

I don't use dop sticks either. My fingers get chewed up when working on small pieces, thin pieces or lack of attention. I cab 2-4 hours on the weekend and by the following weekend everything has healed. If I cabbed every day, I would need to try something different. I got sick and tired of having cabs come off the dop stick and getting burned by hot wax.

Finger nails? What are those?? LOL I'm actually getting pretty good at only wrecking my right index and sparing the rest. There's now a callous where that wimpy under-nail flesh stuff used to be ..heh

I too have a lil fingernail problem. I like Stoner's idea of the crazyglue but I also like to use chopsticks with goop. Even a nail with goop works. I tend to go back to fingers alot tho.
