Lady B’s POETRY OF IMAGES--PHASE 1 OVER

This contest is a chance to demonstrate your poetic creativity based on your interpretations of, feelings about, or reactions to, some of the very inspiring cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, and wraps photographically posted here at RTH. Perhaps you see an image in a slab. Perhaps you feel good just by looking at someone’s tumbled rocks. Perhaps you find the beauty of a cab or a wrap compelling. Or perhaps you just experience a touch of whimsy when you look at another artist’s work.. In this contest I have selected 30 photos of cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, or wraps that inspire me. You are invited to write your own poetry based on these photos.

Here are the basic rules:


1.) Any member of RTH is eligible to enter this contest with the exception of me—Lady B.

2.) Each member may submit up to five entries for judging purposes in this contest. [You may choose 1 image and write up to 5 poems about just that one image; or you may choose up to five different images and submit a poem about each image.] You are encouraged to name your poem(s) but un-named entries will be accepted.

3.) All entries must be an original creation of the RTH member. If you did not write the poem, do not submit the poem for judging purposes.

4.) I plan to leave the poetry up to the creativity of the writer--whether it be a simple ditty along the lines of "One, two, buckle my shoe" or a limerick: "There once was a rock in my pocket" or something more developed, such as a Haiku, iambic pentameter, rhyming couplet, ode, sonnet, or free verse. The poem must be original but it can be a parody of an existing poem—[e.g. “Shine, shine, shine your cab, Gently on the Grinder” would be acceptable]. The poems can be serious, romantic, funny, or whatever strikes your creative fancy.

5. Submissions will not be posted for judging if they are deemed crude, rude, or insulting [The notorious limerick involving Nantucket comes to mind here]. However, “Naughty” creations will be accepted. Consider Tony’s entry in the recent “A Mermaid’s Tear” Contest”



6. Since I will neither be submitting any poems nor judging any poems I will happily help contestants with spell checks, punctuation checks, and “helpful edits” prior to the final posting of the entries. I will send a PM to the respective author with any suggested changes and that author will have final say in how the poem is to be posted for judging. (I will refrain from actually writing any poems for a contestant, much as I do love to write the stuff.)

7. All entries MUST BE SUBMITTED directly to me via PM. I will acknowledge receipt of each entry by reply PM. DO NOT post a poem in this thread; it will be disqualified.

8. When you submit your entry, you will need to identify by name the photo that inspired each poem. [e.g. Rollingstone 1. See the next post of this thread for the assigned names for each photo.]

9. Until the poems are posted in the judging phase of this contest you may swap out entries for new creations.




There will be one “Grand Prize Winner” who will receive a box of assorted rocks, stones, slabs, and fossil shells [Several very generous members here at RTH have helped me accumulate rocks for my own collection as well as for contests. Special thanks go to: BuiltonRock., Desertdweller, Genchaos, Kap, RedwoodRocks, Rockhobbit, steveholmes, and Stoner.] This prize will be awarded to the individual whose poem best reflects the beauty, the meaning, or the fun of the image(s) in the accompanying photo chosen for the poem’s inspiration. The “Grand Prize Winner” will also have first choice of one of three cabs generously donated by one of RTH’s “Kings of Cabs”—Stoner!!!

There will be a “First Runner-Up Winner” who will have a choice of either a slab (once the judging has begun I will post photos of slabs I have available) or a fossil Venus clam geode specimen. This prize will be awarded for the best overall poem regardless of the accompanying photo chosen as the inspiration for the poem. The “First Runner-Up Winner” will have second choice of one of three cabs generously donated by one of RTH’s “Kings of Cabs”—Stoner!!!

There will be a “Second Runner-Up Winner” who will have a choice of either a thunder egg (I have Priday and Succor Creek) or a geode half plus 6 bubble gum agates. This prize will be awarded for the funniest (but not crude, rude, or insulting) poem regardless of the accompanying photo chosen as the inspiration for the poem. The “Second Runner-Up Winner” will also receive the remaining cab of the three generously donated by one RTH’s “Kings of Cabs”—Stoner!!!

• Entries will be accepted until 12 Midnight, Thursday, August 23, 2007. I will the post all of the entries in a new Judging Thread on August 25th. Judging will be open until 12 Midnight, Saturday, September 1, 2007, and the winners will be announced on Sunday, September 2, 2007.

From time to time we come across a poem, a picture, a message that just touches our hearts and inspires our minds, maybe even our lives. I would like to invite RTH members who have something special that they would like to share--not as an entry in my contest, but simply as a reaching out to other members--to post poems, pictures, or messages here in this thread for all to enjoy.

Good grief Kate! I have adult ADD and started to get a headache about half way through the rules. By the time I got to the pics, I was laying on the floor thrashing about. When I started thinking of writing a poem, I went into a full blown seizure. Do you have liability insurance? ;D

I must agree with Curt regarding John's poem which he elected not to post as a contest entry but rather as something to be shared with and enjoyed by all here at RTH. It takes a truly special man to bare his soul. I feel blessed to have met John BuiltonRock. He is one of the people who definitely make RTH a good place to visit.

i will personally offer a prize (bribe) for Matt to give it another go if Lady B allows it. unless Matt decides to register as a member, then all is fair in love and poetry.

p.s. Can you folks get "Sorry I haven't a Clue?" on the Radio? or possibly web download? Matt would appreciate it I'm sure for it's humourous and sometimes poetic approach.

LadyB, are you going to be posting every poem sent to you for judging? If Curt got a seizure just from the rules, think how he will be after reading 200 poems! :)
