Lady B’s POETRY OF IMAGES Contest Hello Fellow RTH Members, There are some very inspiring cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, and wraps photographically posted here at RTH. There are also some truly inspired members of RTH (and perhaps some not-quite-as-inspired ) when it comes to writing poetry. [Think: Nephrite’s recent “ A Mermaid’s Tear” poetry contest.] And by now, just about all of you know how much I LOVE contests here at RTH. So, I have decided to sponsor my own POETRY OF IMAGES Contest based on a Gallery of Photos we have all seen here at RTH. I have contacted a number of members here at RTH and each has graciously given me permission to include images of their respective cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, or wraps which I am showcasing below in a GALLERY OF PHOTOS. All members of RTH are invited to participate in this contest, whether it is through writing poems for the first phase of the contest and/or by voting for the best poems in the second phase of the contest. There will be one Grand Prize Winner and two Runner-Up Prize Winners. Details about the prizes are listed below. I hope all the members of RTH will participate. This contest is not only a chance to demonstrate your own creativity—it allows us to pay tribute to some of the many artists among us who delight us with their true Poetry of Images. Thanks a bunch. Lady B Note: The second post in this thread contains the rules and regulations for the contest. The third post contains the Gallery of Photos that will be used as the basis for the poetry you plan to enter in the contest.

Lady B’s POETRY OF IMAGES Contest Rules This contest is a chance to demonstrate your poetic creativity based on your interpretations of, feelings about, or reactions to, some of the very inspiring cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, and wraps photographically posted here at RTH. Perhaps you see an image in a slab. Perhaps you feel good just by looking at someone’s tumbled rocks. Perhaps you find the beauty of a cab or a wrap compelling. Or perhaps you just experience a touch of whimsy when you look at another artist’s work.. In this contest I have selected 30 photos of cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, or wraps that inspire me. You are invited to write your own poetry based on these photos. Here are the basic rules: 1.) Any member of RTH is eligible to enter this contest with the exception of me—Lady B. 2.) Each member may submit up to five entries for judging purposes in this contest. [ You may choose 1 image and write up to 5 poems about just that one image; or you may choose up to five different images and submit a poem about each image.] You are encouraged to name your poem(s) but un-named entries will be accepted. 3.) All entries must be an original creation of the RTH member. If you did not write the poem, do not submit the poem for judging purposes. 4.) I plan to leave the poetry up to the creativity of the writer--whether it be a simple ditty along the lines of " One, two, buckle my shoe" or a limerick: " There once was a rock in my pocket" or something more developed, such as a Haiku, iambic pentameter, rhyming couplet, ode, sonnet, or free verse. The poem must be original but it can be a parody of an existing poem—[e.g. “ Shine, shine, shine your cab, Gently on the Grinder” would be acceptable]. The poems can be serious, romantic, funny, or whatever strikes your creative fancy. 5. Submissions will not be posted for judging if they are deemed crude, rude, or insulting [The notorious limerick involving Nantucket comes to mind here]. However, “Naughty” creations will be accepted. Consider Tony’s entry in the recent “ A Mermaid’s Tear” Contest” There once was a mermaid from Nantucket Who came to the sea with a bucket, She was looking for jade, But found an oyster instead, She was heard to exclaim "Aw, I'll just shuck it! 6. Since I will neither be submitting any poems nor judging any poems I will happily help contestants with spell checks, punctuation checks, and “helpful edits” prior to the final posting of the entries. I will send a PM to the respective author with any suggested changes and that author will have final say in how the poem is to be posted for judging. (I will refrain from actually writing any poems for a contestant, much as I do love to write the stuff.) 7. All entries MUST BE SUBMITTED directly to me via PM. I will acknowledge receipt of each entry by reply PM. DO NOT post a poem in this thread; it will be disqualified. 8. When you submit your entry, you will need to identify by name the photo that inspired each poem. [e.g. Rollingstone 1. See the next post of this thread for the assigned names for each photo.] 9. Until the poems are posted in the judging phase of this contest you may swap out entries for new creations. Lady B’s POETRY OF IMAGES Contest Prizes There will be one “ Grand Prize Winner” who will receive a box of assorted rocks, stones, slabs, and fossil shells [Several very generous members here at RTH have helped me accumulate rocks for my own collection as well as for contests. Special thanks go to: BuiltonRock., Desertdweller, Genchaos, Kap, RedwoodRocks, Rockhobbit, steveholmes, and Stoner.] This prize will be awarded to the individual whose poem best reflects the beauty, the meaning, or the fun of the image(s) in the accompanying photo chosen for the poem’s inspiration. The “ Grand Prize Winner” will also have first choice of one of three cabs generously donated by one of RTH’s “ Kings of Cabs”— Stoner!!! There will be a “ First Runner-Up Winner” who will have a choice of either a slab (once the judging has begun I will post photos of slabs I have available) or a fossil Venus clam geode specimen. This prize will be awarded for the best overall poem regardless of the accompanying photo chosen as the inspiration for the poem. The “ First Runner-Up Winner” will have second choice of one of three cabs generously donated by one of RTH’s “ Kings of Cabs”— Stoner!!! There will be a “ Second Runner-Up Winner” who will have a choice of either a thunder egg (I have Priday and Succor Creek) or a geode half plus 6 bubble gum agates. This prize will be awarded for the funniest (but not crude, rude, or insulting) poem regardless of the accompanying photo chosen as the inspiration for the poem. The “ Second Runner-Up Winner” will also receive the remaining cab of the three generously donated by one RTH’s “ Kings of Cabs”— Stoner!!! - Entries will be accepted until 12 Midnight, Thursday, August 23, 2007. I will the post all of the entries in a new Judging Thread on August 25th. Judging will be open until 12 Midnight, Saturday, September 1, 2007, and the winners will be announced on Sunday, September 2, 2007.
So put on those thinking caps, sharpen those pencils, and scroll on down to the next post and be inspired by the Gallery of Photos in this POETRY OF IMAGES Contest. Thanks a bunch. Lady B Note 1: For those unfamiliar with the Japanese Haiku style of poetry it has 3 lines; 5 syllables or beats in the first line; 7 in the second; 5 in the third. Scroll down to the next Post and look at the photo Parfive 2. It inspired me to write this Haiku: Captured Crystal Eyes They are pleading to be free They cannot escape. Lady B’s POETRY OF IMAGES Contest--GALLERY OF PHOTOS It was very challenging for me to select the photos for this contest. There are so many very inspiring cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, and wraps photographically posted here at RTH. For purposes of this contest I limited myself to just three sub-boards: Member Photographs, Creating Cabochons, and Wire Wrapping. I also tried to choose photos that were posted since I joined RTH at the end of May—most are from July postings. I contacted a number of members here at RTH and each graciously gave me permission to include photos of their respective cabs, slabs, rocks, tumbles, geodes, thunder eggs, or wraps which I am showcasing below in the GALLERY OF IMAGES. A most sincere Thank You goes to beefjello, blarneystone, BuiltonRock., Cher, Condor, desertdweller, ebrocklds, free4rms, Jonje, krazydiamond, parfive, RedwoodRocks, rollingstone, sabre52, spikeict, and stoner. Each photo has been assigned an arbitrary name by me for ease in identifying the photo chosen for each poem. I am also providing the Sub-Board location and the specific Thread Title for each image, in case anyone wants to read the posts that originally accompanied the respective photos. From time to time we come across a poem, a picture, a message that just touches our hearts and inspires our minds, maybe even our lives. I would like to invite RTH members who have something special that they would like to share--not as an entry in my contest, but simply as a reaching out to other members--to post poems, pictures, or messages here in this thread for all to enjoy.

The following poem was inspired not by a cabochon, but by prayer. I never polished a rock as a kid or hunted rocks in any way. See my father abandoned my mother to raise four kids, a job she was unprepared and ill-equipped to handle. We spent our childhood going from house to house, man to man, abuse to abuse. Today, with the help of my gracious wife and supportive friends, I run a ministry (not for pay) designed to encircle the lives of people who are held in bondage from past hurts, habits and hang-ups. The concept is simple, with God's guidance we love each other and help each other, until in turn we can love and help ourselves. If you will; we embrace, entangle and grate each other until we shine like the Son. When I began to pray and prepare to start this ministry, the idea of rocks was put in my mind. Polished rocks! Next thing I knew I was buying a tumbler off e-bay. I had never tumbled a rock in my life or visited e-bay. I picked up chert along the road cuts and cliffs, not knowing what it was or what would happen in this machine I had won. I sought help and found RTH. Here I learned that we allowed these stones to embrace, entangle and grate each other until they shine like the sun. We use these rocks today in this ministry to symbolize our lives and give hope to the newbies; the following poem accompanies each rock. Our Rock I found this rock upon the ground, broken, crushed and battered down. A lifeless little piece of chert. Jagged, sharp, displaying hurt.
With effort, love, work and time, This little rock began to shine. The hidden heart deep inside, It's beauty could no longer hide.
I pass this beauty on to you, A symbol of what God can do. Carry it with you day by day, To keep in mind our need to pray.
A crushed spirit, a hardened heart, These painful things, He sets apart. Broken lives, created new. He did it for me; He will do it for you.
John I submit this poem not as a means to win the contest, but more as a request, an offer or maybe an inspiration. These words are no great shakes compared to many wonderful works we enjoy, but they are not mine. If you can use this poem and your wonderful talents to inspire, encourage, bring hope or in any way help another, please feel free to have them.

Good grief Kate! I have adult ADD and started to get a headache about half way through the rules. By the time I got to the pics, I was laying on the floor thrashing about. When I started thinking of writing a poem, I went into a full blown seizure. Do you have liability insurance? ;D
John Your poem is a true work of art. Thank you for that, I enjoyed it very much.

Curt I never said I it would be easy, Curt. the true artiste needs to suffer a bit during the creative process. Now get up off of that floor and start writing an award-winning poem. Seriously, I am sorry about the seizure; I hope you didn't drool all over your Pet Wood druzy. There's nothing worse that drool on druzy. ;D Lady B

I must agree with Curt regarding John's poem which he elected not to post as a contest entry but rather as something to be shared with and enjoyed by all here at RTH. It takes a truly special man to bare his soul. I feel blessed to have met John BuiltonRock. He is one of the people who definitely make RTH a good place to visit.

Well, this is an awesome contest idea. Thanks, John, for your poem! Bless your heart, I think you have probably hit a common chord with many people, myself included. How sad is that? So many 'wounded' warriors, and we all gravitate to the Rock (s).
Maybe I can get Matt to write another poem, I'll give it a go.

Let's see:
Some teenagers R hot, Some teenagers R not, But Matt seems pretty cool, He's nobody's fool, And for your poems, Matt, Thanks a Lot!! ;D

Thanks for the kudos, Harry. I'm not sure who will be able to pick up the show on the radio but here is the link for the web: www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/clue/Okay, Harry, now where are your five poems? Surely you can find some inspiration from some of your fellow Brits--Marlowe, Keats, Donne, and that Will guy? Lady B

LadyB, are you going to be posting every poem sent to you for judging? If Curt got a seizure just from the rules, think how he will be after reading 200 poems!

YEP! That's the plan. [But, out of the goodness of my heart, I'm going to send an advance warning to Curt so he can take his meds before he attempts to take in all those magical moments in making words rhyme. Right now, he's still pretty safe. I've only received 6 poems so far.] Say, Tony, where are your poems?!?!? Lady B

Again not for inclusion in the contest. When I was in 8th grade we had to find a poem and memorize it and recite it to the class. The poem I found has stuck with me throughout the years and has always reminded me to stay focused on the dream. It was from a collection of poems in a book called something like: Life is a Watermellon Pickle. The poem was written by Langston Huges. So here it is:
Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams for if dreams go Life is a barren field frozen with snow.
