...Okay, humor me. How possible is it to fly out, rent a car and that room Jamie posted about, but not being able to have much to bring except what works as luggage? Is it possible to come, pick up small pieces sans much in tools, and easy to buy food and all those kind of things? I need to go through all the posts still to find out where the 'base' is, and if you'll be there the whole time. And how far from the airport! Dee Dee - I had no trouble booking a room at the Wikieup Trading Post Motel. (Had to call the post 928 765-2303 instead of the hotel 928 765-2302 because the hotel manager works up front at the post all day.) Camping would be cheaper, but the hotel is not very expensive. I'm sending Jamie money for food and raffel tickets. Just planning on being there a day and a half. I am renting a car at the airport for the easy pickup/return. I'm flying into Phoenix, but you could also check flights to Las Vegas - Wikieup is half-way between. Even though I'm making a short/quick trip, it should not cost too much.

OK, car rented today. It's an SUV so I can fit 3 others (4 if you want to squeeze) and lots of stuff. Anyone flying into Pheonix on the 1st is welcome to get a ride from me. Also, I'll be going back to the airport on the 5th to pick up Mrs. Rocklicker and can take people back who may be having a short trip. Steve

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm thinking I can catch the end of the trip - and it's *only* about 10 hours of driving, although I've never driven alone over 3. And I'm not sure if my used truck can make it, but surely it can! I'm so very tempted. I don't have much in way of tools and camping things, since I've done neither, but I can pick up a rock and toss it in my almost 30 year old backpack! I have a camper shell, but no tailgate. I could still sleep in it though, or up in the cab since I'm a small kind of gal! I'm thinking, I'm thinking...

Hi Everyone, I finally have a menu figured out I think! I am keeping the breakfast meals very light, a continental type and the lunches are fairly light also then I figured we could have a big dinner every night after hunting.
For Thursday day/evening since we will be busy setting up everything I am going to make a mexican stew, it will be served with grated cheese, tortilla chips and sour cream. I can make this at my house and just bring it with us to the campground and heat it up, that way I will still have plenty of time to help set things up.
Friday Breakfast
Fresh fruit cereal rolls and muffins Juice and milk
Lunch
Chicken Salad sandwiches chips cheese veggies and dip
Dinner
BBQ Pork Tenderloin Baked beans corn Bread or rolls and butter
Saturday Breakfast
Crossiants muffins cereal milk and juice
lunch
Ham and Cheese sandwiches lettuce and tomatoes macaroni salad (home made) fruit veggies and dip
Dinner
Fajitas served with tortillas grilled onions and peppers cheese, salsa and sour cream
Sunday Breakfast
Cinnamon rolls cereal fruit juice and milk
Lunch/Dinner
Tortilla Soup served with tortilla chips cheese, diced avocados and sour cream
Dessert
If I can find the stuff I need at the store I am going to make Apple cannonballs and if not, carrot cake
Monday Breakfast
Honey buns cereal juice and milk
Lunch
This is going to be a free for all because by now we will have left overs that we will have to eat so.... pork loin and cheese sandwiches or ham sandwiches macaroni salad chips mexican stew and or tortilla soup
Dinner
Chili served with garlic bread or french bread fruit salad
Tuesday Breakfast
Cinnamon rolls Crossiants and muffins cereal juice and milk
Lunch hot dogs & hamburgers chips veggies, cheese and dip
Dinner
BBQ chicken Baked potatoes green beans rolls and or bread and butter
Wednesday Breakfast
cereal honey buns pop tarts juice and milk fruit
Lunch
another free for all on the left overs fruit salad chips veggies and dip
Dinner
Baked Ham corn or baked potatoes beans bread and butter
Thursday Morning
We will undoubtedly have our choice of muffins crossiants honey buns cinnamon rolls cereal juice and milk
I wanted this menu to be as cost efficient as possible, I also wanted to use as much of the food as we possibly can so I hope nobody minds having leftovers on the 2 occasions.
Now, this is what I need from those of you that choose the menu,
$12 per day for all three meals, that also will include paper cups and plates, plastic forks, spoons and knives. Everyone will be responsible for their own snacks and drinks other than the juice and milk and what I have listed. We will also have to buy all of the ice in Wickenburg on our way to the campsite I will need the money no later than October 19th, that will give me time to do the shopping, prepare what I can here and get it ready to take with us and also freeze some of the things so they last as long as we need them too.
We will also have to pay for the group campsite upon our arrival, so please bring some cash with you. Its $35 per night and we will split that up accordingly.

Put me on the list, I'm going!!!
I'm planning on driving my tailgate-less 2-wheel drive pick-up, leaving Saturday morning and driving the 10 hours in 1 or 2 days, depending on how well I hold up. And stay through Tuesday or Wednesday.
Is there some kind of schedule of what kind of rockhunting on what days anywhere?
I'm a COMPLETE rookie, as far as rockhunting and camping. I don't even own a pair of jeans!!! Be kind, folks!!
luv ya,
~Dee aka Diana

Great to hear you are coming Diana! That sounds like a long haul but just think of the rocks! I too am a camping rookie. As long as I can get my latte from the campsite starbucks, I'll be fine. Steve

I make the worlds worst coffee so someone else has to be in charge of that. I'm all for having a campsite starbucks though!
This is a campers checklist in case any of you aren't sure about what to bring, I'm sure I have left a few things out but thats no surprise. Luckily we won't be that far from civilization so no worries there. This is what I have come up with for a checklist
Jeans shorts T-shirts long sleeve shirt light jacket heavy jacket extra socks a good pair of gloves maybe leather? Waterproof coat/poncho wash cloth Small towel large towel hand soap shampoo and conditioner Toilet paper Extra shoes to wear at campsite something you can slip on and off easily Flashlight or headlamp Batteries First aid kit Knife Bandana Insect repellent Sunscreen Lantern/candles Sunglasses Hat

Doh, and a few more things if you have them or can bring them tent coolers sleeping bags pillows air pads or mattress lanterns folding chairs We have extra chairs and sleeping bags and I know those of you that are flying in cant really bring a lot of camping gear so we will have you covered. If you are driving and can bring any of these things, please do.

ok, I'm still planning on going ! --- still no riders --------- and may have to cancel at the last minute , but if I do get there I could have three extra small tents , one big tent 12x16 with front porch , and my trailer (12x 7) to sleep in ---- also have 3 new extra sleeping bags and a couple bed rolls --- 3 coolers + couple 6pack coolers for day use , 3500 watt generator , kitchen sink ?? ;D, light for night time ( run off gen) --- scrap towels for drying hands ( while rock hunting) couple water tanks , --- and could throw in the micro-wave if you need the "hilton" soup or coffee warmer ;D-- would have to run the gen for it --- --------- What else would anyone need ?? --- if your flying in --- just let me know and I can bring it ?? ( if I have it ;D ) also have some two # hammers , pry bars , etc. --- in the way of tools IS the list of people on page 9 still current ? --- how many "flyers" are there ? ( or need a place to sleep ? ) --- if not needed then I prob wouldn't bring every last thing (tents, bags, etc. )------------------- ( more room for rock ! ;D if I don't have to take items home !)

Are they any younger people going? I may be able to convince my daughter, 18, to come! Now she has experience camping with her dad! And she drives! (fingers crossed) It would be nice if she had some her age to hang out with.

Hey Snowdog, you could very easily talk Agatemaggot into riding with you, he just thinks he cant make the trip, but we all know that he can.

Glad to hear you are still going snowdog! I'm a flyer and what I need more than anything is a shovel. Most everything else I got and can pack in a big suitcase, but a shovel won't fit easily. Preferably a small one I can carry around. BTW, this is coming from someone who up until 6 or so months ago, hasn't been houndin' since I was a kid so maybe I don't need one. BTW, here's my list so far: tent sleeping Bag pad tarps extra blanket camp chair flashlights pocket knife rock pick, hammer and chisel (Just got them today in the mail! Can't wait to use them!) bucket spray bottles gloves goggles FRB's, tape and sharpie first aid kit emergency blanket sunscreen hats (knit and baseball) wirewrapping stuff sudoku
That's what I got ready so far. I still go some getting ready to do as you can see. Steve

Geez Steve, how are you going to get all of that into a suitcase? I'd have to say that you sir, are very prepared. Snowdog, you can leave the sleeping bags at home, we have plenty of those but please bring the coolers and yes, drag agatemaggot with you.....He lives in Waterloo IA, please come with snowdog Harley, you'll have a blast.

Okay, decision is made. I won't be able to make the trip as I'll be driving to Kansas that weekend. My first day will be on that Monday.
*sigh* I wanted to go. I even tried to put them off another week so I could sneak the trip to Arizona in. Sorry, all.

Well, I tried out the fajita recipe on Rodney and my neighbors tonight and everyone loved them so that will be a treat for us all, may have to rearrange the menu so they get cooked on a night when most of the people will be there. They aren't spicy snowdog, unless you add that stuff yourself. Only 13 more days, I'm getting overly excited. We borrowed some very large water containers from our friends so we can fill those up with our well water for drinking. I heard the drinking water at the campground wasn't the greatest so thought we better bring some of our own just in case. If any of you have some very large stock pots or cooking pots, please bring them, also if any of you have a cast iron cooking griddle I could use another one of those as well, if not no big deal.....We will get by just fine.
