Hi, a couple months ago I picked up some rocks in the area around Lexington, Kentucky. A bunch were geodes and I'm still sawing them open when I have a minute. Today I cut this one in half and got a surprise -- it looks like an obvious life form with what looks to be a regular cell structure and those white things that look like maybe some kind of vessels? I've looked at lots and lots of pet wood and this doesn't look like any wood I've seen. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks! I should have mentioned, I forgot a size reference but it is about the size of a tennis ball.

Maybe if it is pet wood, could what looks like a vug be holes that an ant or termite bore into and whatever is in the vug be agatized eggs? I put my jewelers loop up to the 1st pic rock on the left. (pixels are very interesting!) anyway, it looks like the white in the vug closest to the left side has the shape of a worm or maybe larvea.
Just a novice guess but whatever it is, it's really cool!

Would a "fren" be what we know as a "fern" here in the midwest? LOL... Are you sure on that ID?
That's a great idea about looking at the white thingies with a magnifier, I'm going to try that now. Thank you both.

In Oregon i have found fern fossils in this material from the Scio,Oregon area This fossil is 48-78 Bp. though this piece dosn`t have the fern leaf, Bill Orr U of Oregon was given the fossil fern for pollen dating. And it did look like a Boston fern. www.uky.edu/KGS/fossils/plants.htm this site has the Kentucky fern, and a very good list of fossils. Ohio Cyades fossils. i did searh though not a lot of info.

Hey Lapidaryrough, that is a great website. I did a lot of research on KY before I went and I was really impressed with the extent of their online information. Since fossils aren't really my big interest, I didn't look at much. There were certainly lots of little fossils and I found an exquisite but very small piece of coral. I'll see if I can match the thing up to something. What surprised me was that it was inside of what looked like the usual Kentucky geode. And Hi Tony! You should see some of my Challis stuff as it is shaping up in the tumbler. WOW! I am especially in love with the pink and blue little agates. Lots of wood.

It looks a bunch like the fossile Coral we find here in Iowa. I have a few pieces that could pass for an identical twin of yours. I suspect that mine are fairly rounded because they came from an old river bed.

You have found one of the nests of the original Electricals. It is a fossilized hive! You can see the egg cases. That theory is how the Electricals use us as batteries. We are their power source. I guess we have had to deal with them for a long time. Morpheous should see that. I love fossilized history. It definately is an hive.

Is it dangerous?

It is deadly. Even in fossilized form, it can send out microscopic tendrils that enter the brain through the membrane. From there it gets into the neural endings, synapse, and the mind control begins. It starts out slowly. First, we begin to think it is alright for now, then we know and do not want to talk. Ultimately, we are their batteries. They keep us in cuccoons where we are fed thoughts. From there we generate emotions. The emotions are what they want. That is where the power comes from. They attach wires into our spine and tap our electricity. We must eliminate the Electricals. The truth is out there.

You need to get rid of it. Send it away, out of the country, to me.

Matbe you should watch the matrix........................they are just teasing you ;D All that stuff is from the matrix movies. It may be a hive or coral but, it's safe. You should display it in your collection.

The Fossil Professor was at the Friday Rock Club meeting.
The answer: it's a very old coral. Ordivician, he said.
