Okay, now I've done it. I started with a Lortone 3A. But once I committed myself to really long tumbles to produce the highest quality (4-8 weeks in rough etc.) I realized that having more barrels would make that better/easier. So I bought a two-barrel Lortone 33B. It's nice to be able to swap barrels between them. The two new barrels are dedicated to rough, while the original barrel is for all the other stages. But I keep collecting really cool rough, and I realize that it will be months before I can even start it. And some of them I bought to make for people for Christmas and I realize that I might not complete them in time. So yesterday I bought ANOTHER Lortone 33B. My 4th and 5th barrel. And the worst part: I didn't tell my wife. See what you all have done to me? ;D Do you accept responsibility for your part in this affair?

LOL - nope. I take no responsibility. But I have to admit, that's the exact same path/reasoning that happened with me. When my rough pile hit 1000 lbs., I realized I also needed a slab saw and cabbing unit. Just warning ya'. (Oh, missed the step with the wire-wrapping...and now I have a torch and those supplies. Inexpensive hobby, huh. ;D)

i also went down that slippery slope, ejs......started with one CE unit, bought more, decided Lortone was the way to go, ended up with 5 of those, then i had to have a saw. then, a grinder. a drill press. i have at least a ton of rock that i've squirrelled away downstairs. i have sworn off eBay, but i fall off the wagon regularly.
welcome to our shared addiction.

I didn't do it, I was not there, I was not drinking and that's my story and I'm sticking to it. (I see a 12# in your future. It grinds the rough faster) ;D

So much denial! Remember: the first step is to admit that you have a problem.
Oh, wait, am I talking about me or you??!?

NOW it is your responsibility to distribute this sickness as much and as far as you can. A good place to start is by GIVING AWAY tumbled rocks to kids (it can be landscape rock nothing fancy as long as it is smoooooth and shiney) so when are you going to get a saw and a cab machine?

All it takes is just one hit. Forget crack cocaine. This is so much worse. You will now eat, sleep, think, breath, talk, daydream, and fantasize about rocks. It's terrible I tell 'ya. Man, I love it.

I haven't even finished my first batch and I am already nuts over it. Don't forget the supporting "slippery slope" purchases like a saw and polishing kit for Cabs and also the need to be able to take macro pics to share with us A good SLR camera can run $800 lol.

As of now (and maybe it is good to be documenting this, so as to be used later as evidence against me) I have no urge whatsoever to get a saw or make cabs. I just like having the rocks in a bowl, giving them away, and handling them. And I'm no good with power tools!

it's just a matter of time, ejs.......hate to break this news. the only way to get the Mrs. on board with these new purchases is to show her what nice jewelry you are gonna make her.
you are doomed.

Bah. My hubby won't let me get anymore vibes or tumblers I would KILL for a huge rotary and another vibe or two.

EJS, you did EXACTLY what I did when I got started in this hobby and eerilly enough I started with the 3A then went out and bought a 33B as well! (It really does seem to be a good arrangement doesn't it?) I accept full responsibility for your actions. However, in my case I put the brakes on with the 33B but not because I don't want another tumbler, because i'm holding out for an even bigger/better one for cheaper! ;D Good luck managing your growing addiction, it only seems to get worse with time too. I recommend you take your wife out to buy some new shoes to help distract her from the extra rumbling noise.

yup, it all starts with a pebble or a bead in my case. Bad, Bad people who show us these things. But they aren't pusher's just addicts wanting company. Use to be scared of power tools, now I come at them like Commando!
Blame whoever but it may have started out with the guy who invented the stone wheel and his friend who saw what was in side the stone ;D

sitnwrap makes a good point. Since none of you profit from my addiction, you are merely enablers rather than pushers. ;D The one tough part is that I didn't tell my wife about the third tumbler. I told her about the 2nd and she only very grudgingly approved. So I think she would have objected to the 3rd. So I chose to ask for forgiveness rather than permission! Here's my big argument, ready to be deployed when she inevitably notices the third tumbler spinning: "I got a great price for it!" "This will allow me to be *much more patient* in my tumbling!" "If I didn't buy this one, I would never be able to finish your mother's Xmas presents in time!" "They have a great resale value!" Perhaps I should lead with the third excuse. The third tumbler is in transit now, so I've still got time to work on this. Anyone buying it? Anyone? Anyone?

I think you need to emphasize #3. Try not to be too emphatic about #4, she might try to sell it on E-bay behind your back!
I fantasize about a 12- or 15-lb rotary..... probably a Thumlers. My rocks are just too small by the time they're finished, I want to start with larger ones!

Just say you never noticed #3 and that maybe #1 & #2 mated. Never mind that was dumb. I was thinking of my rabbits when I was a kid. Got a female bunny for a pet, found a guy who bred rabbits and threw my pet in with a good looking male. I was able to hide the babies for a while but finally had to fess up to my parents what I had done. ;D I got forgiveness. I sure as heck would never have received permission.

This all sounds very familiar indeed! Started with a 33A in November. Added a 33B in January. Added a second 33B in February just a week after buying a Work Force saw. Bought lots of slabs and tumbling rough. Then on to larger rough. I certainly don't have 1000 lbs, but I'm well on my way with about 300 lbs so far. Now I'm on the path of a 16 inch Covington saw hopefully right after the first of the year. Its a deep, dark, black hole you've fallen into, but you can rest assured you're not alone!

This sounds so familiar. I got into this hobby thinking it would be cheap because I live in an area where rough material is easily collected. First it was a 6.5" trim saw then a 10 inch saw and 3 stage expando drum sander; then a grinder, a drill press and finally a tumbler. Now I want a large slab saw, Flat lap, and many more tumblers. Cheap hobby? Yeah right. I almost forgot all the belts blades and grits. I would like to blame somebody else too.
