I just PM'd some scans of cab templates to Adrian. The scans were not so very good, so I hope Adrian can work with them. I did them in black and white to make the file smaller, but they do not look very good. Anyhow, these are designs mostly based on Sam Silverhawks designs, and my use of French Curves. Woody Thank you Woody, I got your PM and I can work with that picture. Great templates, they cover almost all my new ideas, proving that nothing is new under the Sun Adrian

I think this is a Great Idea! I can't wait for new cab designs. Put me down for a pre-order set. I've thoroughly enjoyed the 1st set of Templates.

Hi, everyone, please take a look at the sheet I drew today. You will recognize of course some or your ideas (Randy's wind-blown tie, the yin-yang, the slim pointy shape on the last row is inspired by Ed's cabs). Please ignore the nasty lines, the curves will be smooth and nice. They look like made out of straight segments because this picture is a print screen. Thanks for looking! Any other ideas? Adrian

My templates arrived Saturday. I should have a few new stones cut from these later this week.
Thanks again Steve and Adrian.
I think this is a great project and I'm really excited to get set #2. I came up with two more designs for the 7 stone series. I'll try to take some pixs tomorrow.
What about some templates with Adrian's dragonfly? It's such an awesome idea.
I hope it's O.K. to offer a couple of suggestions. (I'm a member of several other forums (aviation & photography) and some of those folks have Hindenburg size egos. Jeez.......Any feedback is always taken way too personally. Everybody here seems much more relaxed and mellow. After just a little bit of time, RTH is my favorite!!)
Instead of including the ovals, why not go for something that's not commercially available? I don't have anything against ovals. I have many friends that are ovals. I even have a few friends that are squares. It's just like here's an opportunity to do something different.
How about making the templates out of transparent plastic? This may have been discussed before. I know all types of plastic aren't available in all flavors.
Happy Holidays!

Thank you for the link Jeremy! There are some very interesting shapes there, for sure Rockncritter, no, people don't have here Hindenburg sized egos, but Hindenburg size hearts So your opinions are very welcome. About the transparency of the plastic, I think opaque is better because as you slide the template on the slab, the opaque template would separate the future cab as it is already cut, giving you a better idea about the look of the cab. If transparent, maybe the eye is not capable to make the precise distinction between what is going to become cab and the surrounding areas. Now about ovals, I'm not a fan of that shape either but sometimes I encounter rocks that seem to demand that shape. My intention was to draw one oval only (the one in the bottom of the page). The slim horizontal one I drew it after I noticed there is some free space on the page and it would had been pitty not to use it. The 4 templates for your 7 stones series would make a great start of that 2nd page. I'm waiting for pictures with ideas about new shapes, maybe we could fill this 2nd page too. I will also print the template page that I already made on a paper, take a photo of that paper and post it here; this would give all of you a better idea of the shapes which are very "butchered" in the pic above. You're right Chuck, Randy's shield is a must on that 2nd sheat. As I promissed a bit earlier, here is the pic of the print of what I posted above. This shows the real shapes of the cabs I drew. Sorry for the dark'grey areas, but the countour lines were not visible eitherway. If you have any ideas for improving those shapes please post them. For example Ina said the paralelogram in the lower-right corner would look better if the obtuse angles would be filleted while the sharp angles are pointy. I think she's right. Thank you for looking and for help, Adrian

Adrian, I have found over the years that transparent (or semi transparent) templates work better for me because I want to see the best positioning (or even shape) that is in the rough. If the template is opaque all you see is what is in the opening, not the whole picture with all of its possibilities. I find that getting my mind to focus on the template opening after eliminating the other possibilities is not all that difficult. I vote for transparent versus opaque. Bob

OK, Bob, coming from a master cabber like you this advice must be taken as a law , so I agree with it if transparent plastic is available. Adrian

It may sound middle of the road conservative, but if the templates were cut from a semi-transparent plastic we, would be able to see the whole slab, but at the same time the semi-transparentness would also seperate the open area from the rest of the slab. I lightly sanded on of our clear templates to get this effect.
I must, also say that Adrian is right on about egos on this forum being supressed by the big hearts! This is a wonderful, warm, giving, and open forum. Woody

Here are some shapes that I put on the 2nd sheet. I need the dimension of that 7 stones necklace to resize those four templates. Anyway, what you see is less than a half of the sheet so more ideas are needed! Adrian

WOW, RocknCritter, those wings are fantastic! But this is not cabbing by now, it's stone carving, glyptic. Do you have a favorite shape among the ones above? I could add it, but it's a lot of work to accurately draw those shapes.

But this is not cabbing by now, it's stone carving, glyptic. Adrian Exactly! I call them carvachons While I like the 3rd one best, it's probably much more important to see what other RTH members think. Rather than try to reproduce each little detail on the edge of the wings, how about a somewhat impressionistic shape? I know this would be easier to draw. If someone wanted to cut these as a pair, they could have the option of carving all the little details. The pix below has a four butterfly-like wings. The upper two drawings have three more of the multiple stone series. The one on the left should be self-explanatory. The one on the right shows two variations. I really wish I had the time to cut one of each of these designs before posting just the sketches. The dimensions from wingtip to wingtip and top to bottom are the same as the other series. Thanks again!!

I hadn't noticed this thread until now, cool!! And I think it's too cool that you liked my stuff enough to draw it on a template. (I feel important now) ;D I'm gonna see what I can draw up. Great thread! I'm back. I messed around with Microsoft Paint for a little while....
