I've never shopped Rio Grande because of their sign up deal. So a few days ago I finally went through all the BS and signed up because I needed some stuff and wanted to see their prices. Did I get to look? Nope, said they would send me a confirmation email. The email hasn't come yet. And why do they want my telephone number? They don't need it and all I can think of is a way to sell the #'s or bug the crap out of people.
Sorry Rio Grande, I ordered from someone else.
They get and F from Curt

They musta known you're a Republican. JK, Curt.
I get all my wire through Rio Grande, have never had a problem, but then they're only a few miles away and I do pick up orders only. It's a BIG Company...most orders are handled over the phone.
I highly recommend them. :oS

Curt, it took the better part of two weeks before I got my confirmation email when I signed up. I haven't bought nothing yet, but I can finally see what I can't afford.

In the end, I had to call them to get my account set up. I tried to register online, only to be told that they don't do that online. (Since when?) So I called. Then I called after my catalogs arrived and I still couldn't log in online. Turns out they had misspelled my name...but only for the online account. Was just fine to charge the catalogs and send them to me! But yeah, the prices aren't that competitive on some things. It's more that they have everything, and generally good quality brands. If you prefer buying from one source, they're a good source. (And they have the clout of the jewelry business. I mean, it's like a sort of club when you whip out your 8 inches of catalogs from them. )

Ah Curt, that is why you need a GF to set up the account and order for you!!! That whole process was so intimidating I didn't have the patience, Tony orders but I know he didn't get a confirming email and had to call about some orders! I just ask him to place the order Amber

Curt: We have dealt with RGS for many years, and have no complaints at all. Rarely have we had a back order, they have always given us fast service, and we do not live close by. Woody

I don't know about prices, because I can't see RG prices, but I highly recommend Fire Mountain. Call them on their 800 number and you get your stuff in 3 or 4 days. Nice friendly folks too.

Maybe this company can help. I tend to get great service from Thunderbird when I need silversmithing supplies. I have never ordered from them online because we live only 35 miles away. They have metals, stones and lapidary supplies. www.thunderbirdsupply.com/

Rio Grande only works good if you call to order and get the catalog. I do wonder why, for a big company their website sux so bad, but IJS is worse (website-wise). I order from them on the phone too, no problems ever. You don't want to buy any wire from FM. 5 ft lengths and 3 x the price.

When I order wire from FM, I order enough to get the discount. Brings the price down nicely and you can also get large rolls if you want to.

When I set up my Rio Grande account two months ago, it took about 5 minutes to get my confirmation, then I ordered 60 feet of GF wire. Received it in a couple days.

I signed up Tuesday and got my confirmation email yesterday (<24 hours). After going through their site, the prices seem fairly reasonable.

My confirmation email showed up the next day. Then when I ordered, I never received a shipped email as they said I would. When I found out the money had been removed from my account I called, got disconnected, called again and found it was being processed. I got the order a week later. I guess that is about normal for a big company. I like what I got though. I just hope I can learn how to use this silver wire. Really pretty stuff! Fran

I cannot agree with this thread. RG has been good to me. Easy signup about 9 mths ago. I have ordered probably $100 of stuff from them (I get my wire at JFF in Chamblee, GA which is cheaper than anywhere online). Always compare them against FMG for beads. They have less of an inventory, but better prices on what they do have.

I signed up online about a week ago and got the ocnfirmation e-mail probably in less than a minute. I did have several problems ordering, though, one type of wire I wanted kept removing itself from my shopping cart. I haven't gotten my order yet, so can't comment here.
It sounds like the website has continuing issues --

I have never ordered from them because of the sign up thing. Makes me wonder how much buisness they have lost to people like me who would rather buy elsewhere than be bothered signing up just to see what something costs.

I think the sign up is a security thing, after all they do sell precious metals. We have always had fantastic results, we look up what we want at the website then order by phone. Delivery takes 2-3 days.

Another place to check out is monsterslayer.com. I have ordered from them before because their prices on wire& other metals beat everybody else. Not so good for beads & stuff though. If you need Swarovski crystals a really good place is stigerbeads.com

I've been happy with Rio Grande. I like the quality of their Argentium silver. I did a price comparison with a few other places that were recommended here. What I found was that the Rio Grande price looked higher at first, however, after going through checkout, other places added charges, while Rio did not, that ended up costing more than Rio. That's my own personal analysis anyway. I still do buy certain items at other places that Rio doesn't have.
Curt, you can ask them to send you catalogs (they have a couple) and order by phone if you want. They sent me some as a courtesy, without my asking after a few months of being a customer. It's nice to have.
Good luck, whatever you decide is right for you. Jo

Scott, it IS a security thing. You couldn't get on here or on dirtyrockhounds without signing up. Rio has bought back out sterling and gold filled scraps and paid well for it. We have ordered a lot from them. As Jo said, in the long run they are cheaper by far. Ken
