Some time ago, a mentor of mine sent me a parcel of rocks including some opal. At the time, I was just learning to cut opals and he wanted to help me out. He refused any payment whatsoever but said "someday, you do the same for someone that is just starting out, that is all the payment I need".
I would like to keep my end of the bargain and "pass it on". I have a mix of quality materials that I would like to send to someone that is just starting out in tumbling/cabbing. I am not going to post any photos as I want it to be a surprise but rest assured this will not be junk.
There is no time frame as far as how "new" you have to be to join in on this contest but I am looking for specific types of individuals like the following:
A person that just bought their first tumbler and doesnt know what the heck they are doing.
OR
Someone that for the first time in their life, have picked up a rock, realized the beauty it contained and they are now wondering how to continue their new hobby.
OR
Maybe a person that has just started out but financially cant afford any material right now.
OR
You have a child that is interested but you dont know where to begin and that is why you joined this forum.
Those that think they qualify for this newbie contest.........and they are not limited to those listed above, please send me a pm telling me why you would like this box of material. I will except pms for one week, until Thursday, January 22nd. Myself, and one other member will choose the person that we think could best utilize this box o' rocks.
I will not publicly post what the pms said but will announce who the winner is on Friday, January 23rd. At that time I will ship out the contest winners "prize". ;D

Shannon, This is an awesome contest . I love the pay it forward idiology and think that it has a wonderfully profound effect on the giver and the receiver.

Very original contest, Shannon! WTG for encouraging the persons who are just starting the hobby.
I think it would be interesting to post their motivations though, maybe in an anonymous form.

Well so far........only one person has sent me a pm. I think a lot of the newbies are lurkers and are afraid to pm me about it. Please dont be!!! Send me your newbie stories so that I can enter you in my contest!!! Ive got a great box of rocks for the winner. If I dont get many responses I might post a photo of the rocks I am giving away.

I had a reason for asking and this is the reason: When I first became a member, I did not participate in any of the contests for a while because I didn't think I really had a right to being such a newbie and all.
Newbies, if you are feeling the same way I felt, set it aside and send your stories to weeshan. These contests are fun and the people here want to share their addictions. Time will come when you willwant to share also. It's all good.

Im just trying to give back a little of what I have received. I have met so many great people here over the last couple of years and have been the recipient of many boxes o' rocks (and they usually contained more than what they were supposed to). Its the least I can do. I have gotten a few pm's now and this decision is really going to be tough because EVERYONE deserves the prize!

WINNER WINNER WINNER WINNER!!!!!! This was the hardest contest I have ever had to judge. Each pm was wonderful to read and more than a few tugged on my heart strings. In the end, I decided on ndk as the winner. Nate and his daughters have been picking their tumbling material out of their landscape rock. Their recent trip to a roadcut only yielded limestone.  I believe that the participation of children in this hobby is VERY important as they are the next generation of rock hounds. Nate's two daughters are showing an interest in this hobby, especially his oldest daughter who just happens to be turning 12 years old TODAY. Nate, tell your oldest that I said HAPPY BIRTHDAY and let them both know that a box of goodies is going to be heading their way very soon.
