I haven't heard any mention of the annual Burro Creek outing yet. Who organizes/hosts it? Are there any plans in-the-works for it yet? Will it be in the fall? Just wondering because Steve (northshorerocks) is planning another trip out west this fall, and I'm hoping that his visit might be able to include the Burro Creek event.

From my recollections, there hasn't been an annual outing, rather there has only been the one Burro Creek RTH meet, which took place in November of '07, although several members have been there before and since, I don't think we've had another organized trip there.
Jamie (desertdweller) was the primary instigator in '07.
Fall is the time to be there for sure...I expect summer is pretty brutal, even that high up.

OH! I thought it was an annual thang.
Yeah, I suspect it would be hot there in the summer.
Jamie? Rodney? Any thoughts of doing it again this year?

Hehehe I'm only a few hundred miles away and haven't been there yet. There are a lot of forum members within pretty close driving distance of Burro Creek, including a lot of newer members, so I'd imagine there would be pretty good turn-out. If planned well in advance, maybe some folks would even travel further distances to attend. There are a lot of folks in the mid and eastern US who often say that they want to hound "our neck of the woods", and this might be a good opportunity for them ... Amber, Tony, Fran, Lori, Jo, Randy, Nichole, Susan, Kate, Phil, Harley, Ronda, Nate, Amanda, Pat, Alissa, Michelle, Grace, Tim, etc etc etc.

Hmmmm, something to think about. Don't know if it will work out with me but a fall event gives time to plan. Fran

That trip was so much fun. We live in Calif and would probably opt to drive out instead of flying. I'd love to do it again. I think I would try to stop by Brenda on the way out. The food, the rocks, the beautiful scenery, the people, Roxy's crazy off road driving ;D... I'd do it all again in a second! Steve

MJ, we are planning a RTH gathering in Moab in the beginning of August. Yes I know not the best time but Adrian is coming from Romania at that time so Amber and I decided to go as well. Some other members are planning on coming too. I don't think there will be any collecting, just hanging out with great RTH members. I'll post a separate thread on this in the coming weeks.

Southern Utah, lots of great collecting areas there, too.
might be worth the trip.

Call me a wimp if you want- I've been to Moab in June, when it was so ungodly hot you could only stand to be outside before 9AM and after 7PM, I would imagine August is about as close to "hell on earth" as you can find on this half of the planet.
I'll be making my southern Utah sojourn more in the September/October timeframe thank you very much.

Pffft, heat's nothing ... hat, thin long sleeved shirt, two gallons of Gatoraid per day, ice chest.
I'll have to see what "life" is like come August. If possible, I want to be at Moab. There are a LOT of places to hound not far from there, too!
I'm waiting for response from Jamie about Burro Creek.

The Burro Creek outing was a one time deal. If you want one, organize it. Not too hard to get one put together. There are so many places to go rock hounding and not enough time to do them all!!

Sorry Michaeljohn, you couldn't pay me enough to do a Burro Creek trip at that time of year. As far as hard core rock hounders go, I'd say Rod and I are seasoned veterans and we are well adapted, just like you but we have been there in August and we were dumb enough to go there in June too but I'll never do it again. Even October would be too much for most intelligent people unless it was unusually cool. Our trip was in November and it was still hot enough that several people had overheated on our first day out. The agate fields and best collecting areas are 20 or more miles away from the campground and its an all day thing once you hit the road to go hunting. a bag of ice lasts about an hour out there in those conditions so its hard to keep anything cold for very long. If you guys want to get together in November, I'm all for it.

Ahhhhhh I see! I can definately relate to exactly what you're saying.
Well, I guess it's still a bit early to have any real discussion on it at this point, then, but it's something to keep in mind for later in the year. I'll definately be looking forward to it.

Hey MJ, I can do this, open invitation for anyone that would be willing to travel south to our place after or before Moab. Our yard is one of the best hunting spots I know of. It would be kinda like camping at Burro Creek (since we live in the middle of the desert) only we could go inside when it gets too hot. (Ya, ok.....just like Burro Creek). We have plenty of room for tents, trucks, trailers, whatever you might be staying in and all of our rock piles are shaded under a canopy of trees, so you wouldn't have to worry about sunstroke, (especially if I'm holding the hose....) Michaeljohn, if we could talk you and Northshorerocks into visiting here first, we could even send you to Moab with a 5 gallon bucket full of rock for Adrian to pick through, same goes for you Amber and Tony, and everyone else that plans on doing Moab. Steve, it would be nice to see you again and since you already know the way to our place, you could lead any other enthusiastic, die hard rock hounders down here. This is our campground Complete with three hammocks and a home made swing.

Hehehe problem is ... if I come down there, you might not be able to get rid of me. That's quite a piece of land you have there. That hammock looks quite inviting!
It all depends when Steve can come, how much time he'll be able to stay out here, and what else we'll be up-to. We'll just have to play it by ear until the time gets closer.
